Brymer Doubles Up, Advances in Singles

Senior Tiffany Brymer of Rio Mesa High is the only player from the region remaining in the Southern Section individual tournament after she posted two victories Thursday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

Brymer, Pacific View League champion, is ranked sixth in the girls’ 18 division in Southern California by the U.S. Tennis Assn. and is top-seeded in the tournament.

She lived up to the seeding by defeating Eva Baudenbacher of Corona del Mar, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of the 16, and beat Yasmin Fisher of Buena, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Fisher earned the matchup with Brymer by beating Shervin Saedinia of Calabasas, the Frontier League champion, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 16.

The USC-bound Brymer will play fourth-seeded Maureen Diaz of Mayfield in the semifinals at 9 a.m. today.

Diaz advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over sophomore Brooke Borisoff of Agoura.

Borisoff, two-time Marmonte League champion, beat Susanna Lingman of Woodbridge, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16.

CITY SECTION

Three teams from City Section runner-up Granada Hills High and semifinalist Van Nuys advanced to today’s opening round of play in the City individual tournament after posting victories Thursday in preliminary doubles play at the L.A. Fitness-Warner Center Racquet Club in Woodland Hills.

Katie Hartnett and Lynn Azali of Granada Hills advanced with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Andrea Schwimmer and Ashley St. Amand of City champion Palisades.

Jennifer Steinberg and Andrea Blieden of Granada Hills moved on by beating sisters Kathy and Star Lacificar of Roosevelt, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

Shannon Slotnick and Valerie Ramirez of Granada Hills are top-seeded and had a bye into first-round play, which begins at 12:30 today.

Wandee Chivatakarn and Jane Han of Van Nuys advance by defeating Infinite Jones and Ilisten Jones of Westchester, 6-2, 6-1.

Joanne Joo and Marsha Kadzee of Van Nuys beat Elizabeth Trang and Helen Huynh of Franklin, and the Wolves’ team of Debbie Chang and Tina Trinh beat Carson’s Nikki Sutphin and Kristine Garcia, 6-2, 6-2.
