Abercrombie Wins It for Katella

After Marina’s last-second three-pointer forced overtime, Katella’s Robert Abercrombie scored six of his 25 points in overtime to lead the Knights to a 70-66 victory in the final of the Bolsa Grande boys’ basketball tournament Saturday.

Abercrombie was named tournament MVP.

Dustin Kaatz, who had 14 points for Marina, made a three-pointer with one second remaining to tie it, 59-59, and force overtime.

Katella improved to 4-0.

In the Brethren Christian tournament third-place game:

Brethren Christian 56, Burbank Bell Jeff 55--Joe Gaynor’s only two points of the game came at the right time, as his layup with six seconds left lifted Brethren Christian (2-2). Chris Austad led the Warriors with 24 points (six three-pointers) and 10 rebounds.

In the Coyote Classic:

Lakewood Mayfair 63, Buena Park 36--Josh Childress scored 15 points for Mayfair (4-0) in the championship game. Matt Okoro had 12 points and 13 rebounds for host Buena Park (3-1). Okoro and Childress were named tournament co-MVPs.

In the Lancer Pride tournament:

Bakersfield Garces Memorial 91, Orange Lutheran 83--Patrick Salyer scored 28 points, had seven rebounds and made 14 of 15 free throws for host Orange Lutheran (2-1) in the tournament final. Ryan Fox scored 28 points to lead Garces Memorial.

In the National Sports Grill tournament:

Santa Margarita 54, Irvine 46--Spencer Gloger scored 11 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to lead Santa Margarita (4-0) to the championship.

San Bernardino Pacific 53, Troy 52--Alex Raco made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to give Troy a 52-51 lead, but Mike Hall made a 17-footer with 0.3 seconds left for Pacific (3-1) in the third-place game.

In the Pacific Shores tournament:

Pacifica 81, Mira Costa 79 (OT)--Adam Rachlin scored 22 points and Jason Simpson’s basket with seven seconds remaining in overtime lifted Pacifica (4-1) in the third-place game.

In the Fullerton Tip-Off Classic girls’ basketball tournament:

Troy 62, Loara 34--Veronica Johns-Richardson, tournament MVP, had 29 points, 10 steals and five assists for Troy (4-0) in the championship game.

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson tournament:

El Dorado 58, Western Christian 40--Sydney Patten scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half for El Dorado (4-0) in the championship game.

In the Irvine-Century tournament:

Foothill 56, Sonora 45--Tournament MVP Kristen Mann had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Chavaughn Brown added 21 points and 17 rebounds for Foothill (4-0) in the title game.

In the Woodbridge tournament:

Mater Dei 60, San Clemente 58 (OT)--Lindsay Pavlik made an eight-footer at the buzzer after Kyra Melville’s steal to lift the sixth-ranked Monarchs (3-1) in the third-place game. Maile Shimoda scored 18 points for Mater Dei. Whitney Jones scored 19 points for second-ranked San Clemente (2-2).

In the Orange County boys’ water polo all-star game:

South 12, North 9--Marina’s Justin Fassnacht scored five goals and Newport Harbor’s Jeff Leeper added two for the South, which trailed, 9-8, early in the fourth quarter before rallying. Magnolia’s Kevin Marsh scored three goals, all in the first quarter, for the North.

In the Benson Cup girls’ water polo tournament:

El Dorado 6, Huntington Beach 4--Jill Kurvers scored three goals and Jessica Taylor scored a third-quarter goal to break a 2-2 tie for El Dorado (4-1) in the final.

Rosary 10, Riverside Arlington 6--Natalie Golda and Kelly McNeley each scored three goals in the first half for Rosary (4-1) in the third-place game.

Edison 8, Los Alamitos 7 (sudden death)--Amber Prestegard scored the game-winner from two meters 1:51 into sudden death for Edison (2-2) in a consolation game.

In the Irvine tournament:

Irvine 13, University 5--Nicole Huszcz scored four goals for host Irvine in the final. Hayley Sudeith scored two goals for University.

Capistrano Valley 9, El Toro 2--Tournament MVP Ashley Stachowski scored six goals for the Cougars (3-2) in the third-place game.

In the El Dorado Holiday Invitational wrestling tournament:

Garcia wins--Brethren Christian’s Steve Garcia earned lower weight MVP honors. The 130-pounder had one fall and one default to help the Warriors place fifth in the 33-team field. Poway took first, followed by Santa Ana, Fountain Valley (fourth), Foothill (sixth) and Villa Park (seventh).
