Mendiola Sisters Lead El Toro to Title

El Toro, behind the Mendiola sisters, Giuliana and Gioconda, who combined for 45 points and 20 assists, won the South Coast Classic girls’ basketball tournament with a 76-60 victory over Vista Saturday at University High.

Giuliana had 22 points and eight assists; Gioconda had 23 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds.

Ingrid Look had 13 points for El Toro (4-0).

In other South Coast Classic games:

Santa Margarita 58, El Modena 35--Venessa Ferragamo scored 19 points for Santa Margarita in the third-place game.

Laguna Hills 57, Torrance 49--Anne Bubriski scored 21 points and had 17 rebounds to lead Laguna Hills (5-1) in a consolation game.

Shannon Owens had 19 points, 11 rebounds and five steals for Laguna Hills.

University 57, Trabuco Hills 50--University’s Fala Suiaunoa scored 28 points and Peggie Wu had nine assists for University. Suiaunoa made 20 three-pointers during the tournament to set a tournament record. Amy Schroeder had 15 rebounds.

Emily Deeley led Trabuco Hills with 28 points.

In the Carson City tournament:

Marina 64, McQueen (Nevada) 59--Chanda McLeod scored 21 points and Karyn Fierst 20 to lead the Vikings over last year’s Nevada state champions. McLeod was named the most valuable player of the tournament and Fierst was named to the all-tournament team.

In the Lady Baron Classic:

Irvine 62, Century 49--Jody Carlson scored 19 to lead Irvine (5-2) in the championship game at Fountain Valley High. Carlson was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Aprile Powell scored 22 for Century (7-2).

Canyon 50, Murrieta Valley 42--Megan O’Neil scored 21 to lead Canyon (3-3) in the third-place game.

Rachel Woodward scored 24 for Murrieta Valley (2-2). O’Neil and Woodward were named to the all-tournament team.

Calvary Chapel 62, Fountain Valley 51--Cathy Joens had 24 points and 16 rebounds to lead Calvary Chapel (2-2) in a consolation game.

Lindsay King scored 15 for Fountain Valley (2-4).

Joens and King were named to the all-tournament team.

Sonora 69, Aliso Niguel 43--Sarah Fister scored 27 to lead Sonora (4-3) in a consolation game.

Tara Mutukisna and Erica Castro each scored 17 for Aliso Niguel (2-7).

In the Santa Ana Valley tournament:

Kennedy 37, Bolsa Grande 34--Jennifer Narita’s three-point shot at the buzzer lifted the Fighting Irish in a consolation game. Lesley Mason was Kennedy’s leading scorer with 10 points. Debby Beader had 12 points and Angela Diez had 10 to lead Bolsa Grande.
