Fountain Valley Blanks No. 2 Santa Margarita

Melody Mangrello’s first-half goal was enough as unranked Fountain Valley beat No. 2 Santa Margarita, 1-0, in nonleague girls’ soccer Tuesday at Santa Margarita High.

Diane Meza had an assist on Mangrello’s goal, which was scored 20 minutes into the first half.

Amanda Bell, with nine saves, and Laurie Perkins, with eight, combined for the shutout for the Barons (1-4).

In other nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 3, Esperanza 0--Lindsay Greco scored two goals and Chandra King one to lead the Cougars (3-0-1). Esperanza is 3-3-3.

No. 3 Woodbridge 1, Aliso Niguel 0--Ina Kain fed a long pass to Kelly Orosz down the right sideline. Orosz collected and dribbled toward the goal, beating one defender before scoring into the upper left corner.

Sandra Martinez and Jeanette Hendricks combined for four saves to earn the shutout for visiting Woodbridge (5-1).

Aliso Niguel is 4-2.

Estancia 4, Magnolia 0--Helen Flores had seven saves and recorded her fourth shutout for Estancia (5-3). Magnolia is 2-3.

Katella 4, Santa Ana 1--Goalkeeper Ellen Meunier had four saves for the visiting Knights (2-2-1).

Katella’s Linda Alacorn scored on a penalty kick in the first half to break a 1-1 tie.

Ruth Garcia had three saves in the first half for Santa Ana (3-3).

Los Alamitos 2, Long Beach Poly 0--Jennie Levin scored in the 68th minute and Monique Gillaspie scored 12 minutes later for Los Alamitos (5-1-1).

Tustin 2, Bolsa Grande 1--Maryan Bahadori, who scored both goals for Tustin, scored the winner with 15 minutes left in the game. It was Tustin’s first victory of the season.

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Katella 0, Sonora 0 (Katella advances on penalty kicks, 2-1)--Salin Sanchez created a couple of scoring opportunities for Katella during regulation but could not capitalize. Goalkeeper Eddie Garcia made three crucial saves to earn the shutout for the Knights (2-4-1) in the first-round game.

Juan Martinez and Rafael Mendez scored on their penalty shots; Sonora (1-2-1) missed two and a third was saved.

Buena Park 0, Los Angeles Loyola 0 (Buena Park advances on penalty kicks, 2-1)--Loyola was favored to win and had its best opportunities at the end of the game but couldn’t put a ball past Buena Park goalkeeper Miguel Gaitan (four saves).

Alejandro Ramos and Ricardo Torres scored the first two penalty shots for the Coyotes; the Cubs missed their first two.

Both teams missed their third shot. In the fourth round, Buena Park missed again, and Loyola scored to make it 2-1.

Gaitan saved Loyola’s fifth kick.

Servite 2, Anaheim 0--Brian Murphy scored in the first half and Matt Terry in the second for Servite (6-1-1).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Dana Hills 4, Marina 3--Rick Ekstien, Matt Duhadway, Chris Leveque, and Brian Liebman scored to give Dana Hills (2-4-2) a 4-1 lead. Marina (3-5) scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to cut the lead to one.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 1 Irvine 11, Fountain Valley 4--Nicole Huszcz scored four goals and Emi Umezawa had two for Irvine (6-0), which led 7-2 at the half.

No. 5 Newport Harbor 8, Mission Viejo 3--Jenna Barto scored a game-high four goals for the visiting Sailors, and goalkeeper Erin Kennedy made nine saves.

Mission Viejo goalkeeper Leanna Hahn had 19 saves and four steals. Amanda McKnight had two goals for Mission Viejo (1-4).

Cypress 6, Long Beach Poly 5 (sudden death)--Candy Gifford scored 54 seconds into sudden-death overtime to give Cypress (6-2) the victory.

Fullerton 8, Santa Ana 6--Megan Snow had three goals, two assists and five steals for the host Indians (4-5). Goalkeeper Amber Lohstroh had two assists, four steals and eight saves.

Eddie Bradfield scored two goals and had two assists for Santa Ana.

Dana Hills 6, El Modena 4--Dana Tucker scored five goals and freshman Torey Wolford had 20 saves to lead host Dana Hills (3-0). El Modena is 6-4.

Katella 13, Brea Olinda 7--Junior Devon Wright had five of her six goals in the first quarter, giving Katella an 8-1 lead. Teammate Kelly Cornelius had six of her nine saves in the fourth quarter.

San Clemente 8, Laguna Hills 6--Nicole Peter, Courtney Thom and Kristi Peter each scored two goals for visiting San Clemente.

Santa Margarita 8, No. 10 University 5--Jamie Kroeze scored three goals for visiting Santa Margarita (5-2). University is 4-3.

Savanna 19, Kennedy 10--Four players scored three goals or more as Savanna overshadowed a seven-goal performance by Kennedy’s Karen Steen. Amber Schaefer scored five goals, Sarah Anderson and Rebecca Stark each scored four and Darlene Valderrama three for the Rebels (5-4). Kennedy is 0-3.
