Cannon Goes Off, Chatsworth Wins

Mark Cannon was silenced for awhile Wednesday night. Unfortunately for Chaminade, it wasn’t long enough.

Cannon, a senior guard, sparked Chatsworth with three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to carry the Chancellors to a 56-42 victory over the Eagles in a quarterfinal of the Valencia tournament.

Cannon sank seven three-pointers and finished with 26 points. He made four three-pointers in the second quarter, helping the Chancellors (6-2) build a 35-21 lead.

His reemergence during the final eight minutes helped Chatsworth shake itself from a shooting slump that allowed Chaminade (5-1), ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times, to crawl back into the game.

“This was a big game for us,” Cannon said. “This was about getting respect and being one of the L.A. Times’ top 10 teams.”

Chatsworth was limited to one field goal in the third quarter and Cannon missed on two feeble three-point shots.

Chaminade outscored the Chancellors, 15-3, during the stretch to take a 40-38 lead.

“In the third quarter they had a defensive stand,” Coach Fluke Fluker of Chatsworth said. “We weren’t hitting and I had to remind our guys of how many jump shots they take everyday. We needed some inspiration. I tried to build their confidence back up.”

Cannon’s three-pointer with 4:53 left provided the inspiration Fluker was looking for and it gave Chatsworth a 47-40 lead.

Cannon added two three-pointers in the final minute and a half.
