Woodbridge Beats Sailors to Win Irvine Tournament

Nichole Swanson scored with a shot that bounced off the crossbar, giving Woodbridge a 2-1 victory over Newport Harbor in the Irvine Tournament final Friday night at Irvine High School.

Emily Schwimmer scored earlier in the first half to put Woodbridge up, 1-0. The Sailors’ Brooke Flanson tied the score seven minutes later on a free kick that was deflected into the goal.

Jeanette Hendricks, Jeanelle Godges and Sandra Martinez split time in goal for the Warriors (6-1-1), combining for four saves and one goal allowed.

Goalkeeper Jordan Fredricksen made seven saves for Newport Harbor (4-2).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Pacifica 1, Lakewood St. Joseph’s 0--Forward Sarah Moranville scored her third goal of the season for host Pacifica (5-0-2) off an assist from Michelle Burcham. Kendra Anderson had 12 saves for St. Joseph’s.

Sunny Hills 4, Whittier 0--Jill Wilson scored the first goal three minutes into the first half and assisted on another. Simi Phull scored one goal and had two assists.

Ashley Moskovich recorded her third shutout for the host Lancers (4-0-3).

Megan Broschak and Renee Garand scored the other two goals.

Laura Wilson made nine saves for Whittier (4-1).

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Brea Olinda 5, Whittier California 0--Mark Becher made two saves for his sixth straight shutout. Trevor Bermudez scored two goals and Mark Sheridan, Andrew Garrison and Daniel Flores each scored one for the semifinal victory. The Wildcats (7-0) host Servite at 5:45 p.m. today in the championship game.

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

Mater Dei 3, Troy 1--Mater Dei scored all of its goals in the first half. Kevin Novak had two to lead the Monarchs in the consolation game.

Sunny Hills 2, Chino 1--Brian Broschak scored two goals assisted by Brent Templeton in the second half for Sunny Hills (1-6-1).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Edison 5, Laguna Hills 1--Devin Kato got his second hat trick of the week, scoring three goals to lead Edison. Kato, who also had an assist on Josh Finestone’s goal, leads his team with 10 goals.

Esperanza 3, Canyon 0--Sophomore Matt McNally scored his fifth goal of the season for the host Aztecs. Goalkeeper Ryan Kolman earned his third shutout with six saves.

Canyon dropped to 1-6-1.

El Dorado 3, Los Alamitos 0--El Dorado’s defense, sparked by sweeper Brendan Gulledge, played better than its offense as the Golden Hawks improved to 10-0-0 behind goals from Ryan Eldred, Ignacio Cid and Dustin Brandom.

Estancia 12, La Quinta 0--Ceasar Terrones and Grant Nelson each scored three goals and Hilario Arriaga made one save for his second straight shutout. Estancia (5-1-4) scored eight goals in the second half and had 22 shots in the game. La Quinta had four shots.

Fountain Valley 1, Pacifica 0--Ryan Lancaster scored the only goal as host Fountain Valley got its fourth shutout of the season.

Irvine 4, University 3--Matt Taylor’s 11th goal of the season was the game-winner for Irvine (4-2). University is 4-3.

Los Amigos 3, Savanna 2--Aban Garcia stole the ball and scored on a breakaway in the 55th minute to lift host Los Amigos (3-1). Frank Guillen made eight saves for the Lobos, including three on point-blank shots.

Orange 1, El Toro 0--Alex Gallegos earned his first shutout of the season for host Orange (3-3).

Saddleback 4, Century 0--George Galvez scored two goals to lead host Saddleback (8-1-2).

Santa Ana Valley 2, Lakewood 0--Alfred Hernandez had 11 saves for host Lakewood (3-4) but Eric Sanchez and Neco Ochea each scored for Santa Ana Valley (1-4-2).

Santa Margarita 5, Santiago 1--The Eagles dominated host Santiago after the first 15 minutes, scoring three goals by halftime and handing the host Cavaliers their first loss of the season.

Sabastian Galmarini, the Eagles’ leading scorer, got his sixth goal of the season and Brandon Meeks scored two goals for Santa Margarita (3-2-2).

Felipe Leyva broke up the shutout with 15 minutes left, netting the lone goal for Santiago (5-1).

Valencia 6, Garden Grove 0--Jose Felix had one goal and two assists to lead Valencia in the shutout.
