Highland 2, Royal 1--Little-used forward Marvin Rodriguez stripped Royal sweeper Evan Kay of the ball and scored on a breakaway with seven minutes remaining to give the Bulldogs (9-3-1) third place in the Royal tournament.

“I just came in motivated to show my coach I deserve to play,” said Rodriguez, who has two goals. “I only play about five minutes a game.”

Rafael Garcia also scored on a breakaway to give Highland a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Royal (4-6-1) tied the game three minutes into the second half when Jake Van Sloten stole the ball from Bulldog sweeper Alfred Bedrosian and scored from 10 yards.

San Marcos 3, Santa Paula 1--Rolando Lira scored his 11th goal on a second-half penalty shot, but the Cardinals (10-3-2) lost in the Royal tournament consolation final.

Burroughs 2, Lancaster 1--Brian Criscuolo scored one goal and assisted on anther for the Indians (5-3-4), who claimed 11th place in the Royal tournament.

Lancaster (8-2-2) scored on a penalty shot by Kamaron Kent in the 75th minute.

Torrance 3, Simi Valley 0--The Pioneers dropped a second-round game in the South Torrance tournament.

Earlier in the day, Simi Valley (3-2-1) defeated Culver City, 5-3, in a first-round game in which Sergio Renes scored twice.

GIRLS’ GAMES

Westlake 2, Buena 1--Tasha Spangler broke a 1-1 tie in the final 10 minutes to lift the top-ranked Warriors (8-0) into the championship game of the Simi Valley tournament today at noon against Simi Valley.

Earlier, Westlake defeated Crescenta Valley, 3-0, in a quarterfinal, with Naomi Chu scoring two goals and Jenna Wirtz adding another.

Simi Valley 3, Ventura 1--Cindy Mallet had a goal and an assist for Simi Valley (5-1-1) in a semifinal of its tournament.
