Strong Contingent Set for L.A. Invitational

More than 2,200 high school athletes, including many outstanding performers from City Section schools, will compete Saturday in the 38th annual Los Angeles Invitational indoor track meet at the Sports Arena.

High school events begin at 11:15 a.m., except for the shot and discus which will be contested at USC’s Cromwell Field at 9. If it rains, the shot will be contested indoors at the Sports Arena.

Open competition begins at 6 p.m.

City Section boys competing include:

50-yard dash--Demitrius Patterson of Birmingham, Clay McTear (Carson) and Thunder Collins (Manual Arts).

500-yard run--Ben Young (Crenshaw) and Ron Fleming (Fremont).

880--Eric Gonzalez (Birmingham).

Seeded two-mile--Humberto Vargas (Belmont) and Yubini Huitz (Fremont).

50-meter high hurdles--Greg Lee (Dorsey), Jaishun Wheeler (Fremont) and Amos Head (Dorsey).

High jump--Eric Irving (Dorsey) and Ricky Duff (Manual Arts).

Pole vault--Jaime Camillo (Gardena).

Long jump--Billy Wingfield and Mark Destelle, both of Carson.

Triple jump--J.L. Lewis (Dorsey), Amos Head (Dorsey) and Devon Peale (Gardena).

The girls’ competition includes:

50-yard dash--Karita Brown of Manual Arts, Dannea Grant (Crenshaw), Nakeisha Perkins (Grant), Eboni Grayson (Taft) and Astrit Nassar (Franklin).

500-yard run--Racquel Johnson (Westchester).

880--Molly Rocha (Grant), Maria Reynaga (Franklin), Ericka Dolezal (Birmingham) and Nicole Campbell (Palisades).

Seeded mile--Tiffany Burgess (Birmingham).

50-meter hurdles--Chandalaria Whitlo (Westchester) and Karita Groves (Gardena).

Long jump--Natalie Shorten (Dorsey) and Kanisha Cole (Banning).
