Mountie Guard Is Sidelined

Share

Montclair Prep point guard Micah Cohen is out indefinitely with a sprained right ankle.

Cohen, who averages 5.4 assists, was injured Wednesday in the second quarter of a 90-50 victory over Silverado. He is wearing a soft cast and sat out a 90-65 victory over Oak Park on Saturday.

He will sit out the Mounties’ regular-season finale Wednesday against Calabasas but could return for the start of the Southern Section playoffs on Feb. 20.

Guard down: Bell-Jeff point guard Chris Jones will sit out the remainder of the season because of academic ineligibility.

Jones, a freshman, is averaging 7.9 assists, second best in the region.

Getting healthy: The Moorpark boys’ team will likely regain the services of senior post player Andrew Carlson this week, Coach Tim Bednar said.

Carlson averaged eight rebounds in the Musketeers’ first 11 games before suffering a knee injury. He missed much of his junior season with a similar injury.

Catching up: Several teams in the region will conclude the regular season with busy schedules this week to make up games that were postponed last week because of heavy rains.

Boys’ teams from Channel Islands, Thousand Oaks, Hueneme, Moorpark and Nordhoff will play three games instead of two.

On the girls’ side, Buena, Hueneme, Oxnard, Rio Mesa, Agoura, Camarillo, Calabasas, Moorpark, Nordhoff, Santa Clara, Santa Paula, St. Bonaventure and Oak Park are all scheduled to play three games.

The Hueneme boys have the most taxing schedule.

The Vikings played at Oxnard on Monday and will play host to Santa Barbara today and to Buena on Wednesday.

Off target: Hart boys’ Coach David Montgomery blamed three-point shooting for a 46-43 Foothill League loss to Burroughs on Friday.

Hart (15-9, 6-2 in league play) made seven of 22 three-point shots, but three-point leader J.T. Stotts made only one of seven.

In Hart’s league opener, Stotts made two of 13 three-point shots in a 63-60 overtime loss to Saugus, making him three for 20 in the team’s two league losses.

“We didn’t play aggressive offense,” Montgomery said of the loss to Burroughs. “We settled for the jump shots and they weren’t dropping.”

Hart shot 32% and made only six of 11 free throws.

“You don’t win that way,” Montgomery said.

Lucky bounce: It didn’t go as planned, but the Palmdale boys’ team isn’t complaining.

Against Antelope Valley on Friday, Palmdale’s Kerry Yates was supposed to get an alley-oop pass for a dunk at the buzzer. But Imad Rodriguez’s pass hit the backboard and the rim.

“It came off the rim and bounced right into [Yates’] hands,” Antelope Valley Coach Tom Mahan said.

Without hesitation, Yates put the ball into the basket at the buzzer, giving Palmdale a 66-64 victory over the first-place Antelopes.

Still alive: Last week, the El Camino Real boys’ team figured to be playing out the string.

But after beating Birmingham on Wednesday, the Conquistadores could reach the playoffs with an impressive final week.

One reason is sophomore center Justin Saad-Anthony. Saad-Anthony, who had been averaging 12 points, had 16 points and 14 rebounds against Birmingham. He scored 29 points against San Fernando on Friday and 24 against Granada Hills. El Camino Real (8-12, 3-5 in the North Valley League) has played league champion San Fernando twice.
