Another Run Comes to Cross

Share

It started the same way last season for Cal State Northridge guard Trenton Cross. Low shooting percentage, too many turnovers, wavering confidence.

It might end the same way too, and that will be all right with Cross, who last season averaged 17.8 points over the last 11 games and was named Big Sky Conference most valuable player after scoring 21 points in the tournament championship game.

“We have a lot more talent this year and the minutes are harder to come by,” Cross said. “I’m just trying to do the most with the time I’m getting and build some momentum for the stretch run.”

Cross, a forgotten man most of his senior season, has seen his role increase dramatically the past three weeks. The Reseda High product has scored in double figures in five of the past six games and has 20 of his 45 assists in those games.

In two games last week he made five of nine three-point shots and had six steals while committing only two turnovers in 57 minutes.

Starved for consistent guard play, Coach Bobby Braswell is enjoying the recent hot Cross run.

“Trenton has taken advantage of more minutes recently and is playing well,” Braswell said. “He proved last season that he can step up his level of play in the big games. Those games are coming up for us again.”
