Ventura Women Again State Case

Share

The Ventura women’s basketball team supposedly was in for a tougher time this season. Yet, the Pirates--minus four starters and nine players from last season--are breezing toward a possible third consecutive state championship.

Ventura, ranked No. 1 in the state throughout the season, entered the week 30-1, with a 29-game winning streak. The Pirates are 101-2 over the past three seasons.

“I’m shocked,” said Ned Mircetic, Ventura’s coach. “Of all the teams I’ve coached, this team has achieved far greater than I ever imagined it would.”

Low Waves: For the second straight year under Coach Frank Sanchez, Pepperdine is off to a surprisingly lackluster start. The Waves are 4-6-1 and lost two of three last weekend to previously winless Cal State Sacramento.

Pepperdine’s team batting average is .251, and the only hitters off to strong starts are senior designated hitter Steve Zorn (.387) and senior center fielder Chris Cosbey (.356).

The Waves have an opportunity to build momentum this weekend when they travel to Fresno State (1-8).
