McCoy’s Basket Seals the Upset for Taft, 47-46

Denisha McCoy made a three-point basket with two seconds to play to give the Taft High girls’ basketball team a 47-46 upset over fourth-seeded Washington in a City Section 4-A Division first-round playoff game Friday night at Taft.

McCoy, who finished with eight points, connected from the top of the key for 13th-seeded Taft (15-6). Tynisha Houze had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Lisa Hawkins had eight points for Taft.

Camille Norwood, Washington’s top scorer, was held to 10 points.

In other 4-A first-round games:

Westchester 62, Grant 52--Nakeisha Perkins had 19 points, 13 rebounds and six steals and Angela Terry had 17 points, six steals and four blocks but host Grant (20-5) never led and committed 26 turnovers.

El Camino Real 59, Banning 53--Cara Blumfield scored 25 points, and the Conquistadores (20-1) built a 32-20 halftime lead and held on at El Camino Real.

Chrissy McClain had 13 points and 11 rebounds for El Camino Real.

3-A DIVISION

Granada Hills 50, Huntington Park 45--Sophomore Jessica Cosby had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Granada Hills, which overcame a 38-36 fourth-quarter deficit at Granada Hills.

Lindy Gayton added nine points and 14 rebounds for the Highlanders (16-4), who will face Franklin in the quarterfinals. Lupe Quintana scored 22 points for Huntington Park.

Franklin 47, Poly 28--The game was tied, 21-21, in the third quarter before Franklin (19-7) closed with a 26-7 run at Poly. Quiana Jeffries had seven points, 12 rebounds, seven steals and eight assists, while Ciara Jeffries had 10 points and 10 assists for Poly (8-12).

Eagle Rock 40, Sylmar 30--Veronica Ramos scored nine points for Sylmar (10-10) at Eagle Rock.

Birmingham 55, Gardena 42--Tanya Silva scored 15 points and Juana Gatson had nine points and 11 rebounds for Birmingham (14-7) at Gardena.
