Quartz Hill Has Another Golden Performance, 2-1
Golden League representatives haven’t exactly taken the Southern Section soccer playoffs by storm in recent years, but the Quartz Hill High girls’ team is bucking the trend.
The Rebels, league champions for the second time in three seasons, on Saturday defeated Crescenta Valley, 2-1, for their second playoff victory in four days.
Quartz Hill (17-4-2) will host Peninsula, the division’s second-seeded team, on Tuesday in a second-round game.
Freshman Kellie Cox scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute Saturday off a pass from Olaya Salazar.
Julie Herrold gave the Falcons (15-3-5) a 1-0 halftime lead before Julie Gold scored nine minutes into the second half for Quartz Hill.
Last season, the three girls’ and three boys’ Golden League playoff participants combined to win one game and were outscored, 26-5.
This season, the league’s representatives are 2-5 after one round of play.
In other first-round games:
Simi Valley 1, Arroyo Grande 0--Cara Destefano scored two minutes into the second half after receiving a throw-in from Michelle Thuotte in a Division I game at Simi Valley (18-5-1).
Simi Valley, the Marmonte League champion, will play Pacific League co-champion Arcadia on Tuesday at a site to be determined by a coin flip.
Peninsula 2, Thousand Oaks 1--Lauren Mercaldo scored midway through the first half on a pass from Susan Shivokevich to give Thousand Oaks (12-7-2) a 1-0 lead in a Division I game at Peninsula.
Hart 8, Colton 1--Erin Misaki had a first-half hat trick and five other players scored for the Indians (20-2-3) in a Division I game at Hart. Colton finished 11-11-3.
Mater Dei 5, Canyon 0--The Monarchs overwhelmed the Cowboys (9-5-6) in a Division I game at Mater Dei.
Buena 3, Atascadero 0--Ashleigh Garmon’s goal in the 24th minute opened the scoring for the Bulldogs (18-3-4), followed by goals from Natalie Sanderson and Shannon Morten in a Division II game at Buena.
Notre Dame 2, Santa Ynez 0--Jenna Graffam scored in the first half and Rebecca Rebbe in the second and the Knights (16-3-3) advanced to a Division III second-round game Tuesday against Mission League rival Harvard-Westlakeat a site to be determined.
Notre Dame defeated Harvard-Westlake, 2-1 and 2-0, during the regular season.
Harvard-Westlake 3, Nordhoff 0--Nadine Apelian scored in the first half and Susan Baise and Karly Katonah scored after intermission in a Division III game at Harvard-Westlake (12-8-1).
Chaminade 12, Lancaster 0--Freshman forward Tara Donahue had three goals and two assists in a Division III game.
Freshman Kim Taylor contributed two goals and three assists for Chaminade (23-2-1), which has 17 shutouts, and Carly Stokes also scored twice.
Calabasas 2, Lompoc 0--Kara Coffino and Ashley Dechter scored second-half goals and goalie Kelly Cheever recorded her ninth shutout, sending the host Coyotes (12-3-2) to a second-round Division III game against Chaminade on Tuesday at a site to be determined.
Mayfair 1, La Canada 0--The host Spartans (13-2-1), seeded third in Division III, surrendered a goal 10 minutes before halftime and were upset.
“We just couldn’t focus and put the ball in,” Spartan Coach Mary Pat Durkin said. “We had tons of chances.”
Oak Park 3, Cate 0--Cindy Verity scored her ninth goal and Rebecca Carroll scored her 26th and 27th in a Division IV game.
Oak Park (11-8-2) advances to face Tri-Valley League foe La Reina on Tuesday at a site to be determined. The teams split their two regular-season meetings.
La Reina 1, Villanova 0--Aimee Thompson’s 22-yard direct kick cleared a wall of defenders and found the upper left corner of the net midway through the first half of a Division IV game at Wildflower Park in Thousand Oaks.
Thompson has scored 32 goals in 21 games. The Regents improved to 16-5.
St. Bonaventure 6, Oakwood 0--Erin Croasmun and Jessica Griffith each scored twice for the host Seraphs (21-2-1) in a Division IV game.
