Golden West Pounds Riverside in Conference Opener
Jeff Jones was three for four with a two-run home run to lead Golden West to an 11-4 victory over Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference baseball opener Saturday at Riverside.
Jones’ homer gave the Rustlers (8-3, 1-0) a 6-2 lead in the third. Rustler starter Corey Carr (2-0) gave up four runs in the first three innings, then pitched four scoreless innings.
In other Orange Empire Conference baseball games:
Cypress 7, Saddleback 3--Brandon Pack had two hits, a run scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases for Cypress. Pack stole home in the eighth inning.
Brandon Smith had a double and a home run for the Chargers (8-5, 1-0). Clare Langford had two hits for Saddleback (9-2, 0-1).
Santa Ana 7, Orange Coast 4--Cory Williams had the winning hit in the eighth inning, singling in Dan Young to give visiting Santa Ana (9-2, 1-0) the final lead.
In nonconference baseball:
Fullerton 7, Southwestern 3--After giving up two early runs, Jim Hostetler settled down to pitch 8 2/3 solid innings for the host Hornets (8-4-1). During one stretch, Hostetler retired 11 consecutive batters.
