In other Division II games:

Orange 2, San Clemente 1--Showing the skill and quickness that earned it a Southern Section title two years ago, the Panthers upset the visiting Tritons.

Sophomore Ian Duncan, who scored twice in the last five minutes of the Panthers’ 2-1 first-round victory over Corona, lifted his team again when he beat San Clemente goalkeeper Kevin Mehrens with about five minutes to go.

Duncan ran up on a ball that had been chipped over the defense, then lifted a soft shot over Mehrens, who had been charging toward him.

“I knew the ball was going to come my way, so I got a jump start on it,” Duncan said. “The only thing I could think of was to chip it over him because there is nothing else you can do. You can’t dribble around him because he’ll just stick his leg out and try to stop you.”

Orange, which will play Century League rival Foothill in the quarterfinals, dominated the game. Orange also went the entire game without receiving a yellow card, something that has hurt the team in the past.

“I was happy we didn’t receive a single yellow card,” Orange Coach Eric Van Veen said. “I think that’s another reason why we won.”

San Clemente Coach Mike Pronier said his team was not comfortable playing on the Panthers’ field, which was in great condition despite the recent heavy rains.

“It’s hard coming off our field that we’ve played on the last five games,” Pronier said. “It’s a bit of a different game. When you get on a mud field for three or four games it changes your style a little bit, and we really didn’t adjust that well today.”
