Buena Has to Put In for Overtime to Collect Victory

Kelly Murray’s four points and Renae Hofmann’s three-point basket in overtime carried defending Southern Section Division I-A champion Buena to a 52-49 second-round victory over Righetti on Wednesday night at Righetti.

Murray, who scored 15 points, made a jump shot and two free throws after Righetti rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to pull even.

Buena (25-2), which reached the Southern Regional semifinals last season, outscored Righetti, 8-5, in overtime.

Hofmann led the Bulldogs, who are ranked first in The Times’ regional poll, with 23 points. Kelly Greathouse had nine points--including a free throw in overtime--and 21 rebounds.

In other Division I-A games:

Crescenta Valley 78, Bell Gardens 49--Michelle Greco had 31 points, eight rebounds, six of her team’s 19 steals and five assists for Crescenta Valley (24-2) in a second-round game at Bell Gardens (21-9).

Tara Gregory contributed 16 points and six steals for the Falcons, ranked second, and Sinnamonn Garrett had 12 points and nine rebounds for Crescenta Valley.

Crescenta Valley will face El Toro, which defeated Capistrano Valley, 78-68, in double overtime.

Marina 57, Thousand Oaks 35--Natalie Nakase scored five of her 14 points in a 9-0 second-quarter run that gave Marina (24-4) a 22-10 lead in a second-round game at Marina.

Santa Ynez 67, Notre Dame 45--Michelle Barraza scored 13 and Judy Diaz added 12 for Notre Dame (17-8) in a quarterfinal-round game at Notre Dame.

Harvard-Westlake 75, Ganesha 49--Corrie Roberts had 21 points and 10 rebounds and L’Tanya Robnett scored 17 points for Harvard-Westlake (24-5) in a quarterfinal game at Ganesha.

Nordhoff 86, San Dimas 70--Erin Barker scored 32 points and Christen Roper added 22 points and had 26 rebounds and six blocked shots for fourth-seeded Nordhoff at Nordhoff.

Nel Becker had 22 points and a Ventura County record 19 assists for the Rangers (22-6).

Cerritos Valley Christian 71, St. Bonaventure 36--Senior forward Sarah Middlebrooke had 29 points and 12 rebounds for Valley Christian (22-6) in a quarterfinal game at St. Bonaventure (17-8).

Brethren Christian 56, Bell-Jeff 31--Stacy Cobb had 10 points and 10 rebounds for defending division champion Bell-Jeff, which fell in a quarterfinal game at Brethren Christian.

Chadwick 53, Campbell Hall 48--Diane Webber had 17 points for visiting Chadwick (18-1) in a second-round game.

Arrowhead Christian 66, Flintridge Prep 62--Martha Wong scored 21 points and Lori Tashian added 18 points for Flintridge Prep (10-10) in a second-round game at Arrowhead Christian.
