Bugueiro Leaves Wilson Buzzing

Fernando Bugueiro beat the buzzer not once, but twice, to give Verdugo Hills High a 69-67 victory over Wilson on Wednesday in a Northern Conference boys’ basketball game at Verdugo Hills.

Bugueiro sank a three-point shot at the end of regulation to tie the score, 56-56, then made a layup as time expired in overtime.

Bugueiro scored 21 points, Kevin Baird had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Joe Moore added 14 points and eight assists for Verdugo Hills (7-7, 3-0 in conference play).

Simi Valley 93, Westlake 61--Rafael Berumen had 34 points and 19 rebounds for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Brett Michel hit four three-point baskets and finished with 21 points for Simi Valley (14-2, 3-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.

Joey Cuppari had 19 points and Kevin Howard scored 18 for the Warriors (7-6, 0-3).

Thousand Oaks 64, Camarillo 61--Sophomore Tim Chevalier, who scored 15 points, made three of four free throws in overtime and eight of nine after halftime for the Lancers (5-9, 2-1) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Bas Van Rhee had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Lancers, while Mark Larson had 17 points for Camarillo (6-6, 0-3).

Oxnard 52, Santa Barbara 41--Jacob Galloway, scoreless for three quarters, sank 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Yellowjackets (8-4, 2-0) pull away in the final minutes of a Channel League game at Santa Barbara.

Ventura 67, Buena 57--Jeff Staniland had 22 points, Mike Ostic scored 15 and Conner Robinson added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (4-9, 1-1) in a Channel League game at Ventura College.

Ryan Fay had 17 points for Buena (3-11, 0-2).

Rio Mesa 57, Hueneme 47--Paul Guerrero scored 17 points for the Spartans (4-6, 1-1) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Dwight Norman and Carlos Bailey scored 11 points each for Hueneme (4-7, 0-2).

Oak Park 54, Calabasas 38--Greg Jones scored 13 points for the Eagles (7-6), who held the Coyotes to a season-low point total at Calabasas (7-8).

Santa Paula 81, Hart 70--Joey Riccio had 29 points, including four three-point baskets, and the Cardinals (12-4) sank 10 three-point baskets at Santa Paula.

J.T. Stotts had 31 points, including five three-point baskets, and four assists for the Indians (9-7).

Cathedral 63, Bell-Jeff 61--Jesus Nava’s basket put the Phantoms (4-9) ahead with 12 seconds left and Miguel Ugalde added a free throw with three seconds remaining in a Santa Fe League game at Cathedral.

Ruben Douglas scored 35 points for Bell-Jeff (7-8, 0-2) and Mike West had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Simi Valley 58, Westlake 41--Jamie Sturdivant had 14 points and six assists for the Pioneers (8-5, 2-1) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

La Reina 45, Calabasas 40--Lindsey Mettam scored 13 points for the Regents (2-4) at La Reina.

Stephanie Goldman had 19 points for Calabasas (6-4).

Nordhoff 66, St. Bonaventure 38--Nell Becker scored 24 points and Erin Barker added 22 for the Rangers (11-4), ranked No. 9 in the region by The Times, at St. Bonaventure.

Shannon Fink scored 13 points for the Seraphs (7-6).

Wilson 42, Verdugo Hills 32--Maria Felix had 16 points but only two other players scored for the Dons (0-10, 0-3) in a Northern Conference game at Wilson.

Thousand Oaks 61, Camarillo 38--Katie Stanulis scored 12 points for the Lancers (8-3, 3-0) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
