Fargas, Cuppari, Leonard, Evans Make All-State Team

Justin Fargas of Notre Dame High, Joey Cuppari of Westlake, Matt Leonard of Palmdale and Emmanuel Evans of Birmingham, all seniors, were named to Cal-Hi Sports Magazine’s all-state team.

Area players receiving second-team All-State distinction include Sylmar’s Ray Solis and Shaun Avalos, and Royal’s Jason Arredondo, all seniors.

Jerry Owens of Hart and Mike Siedman of Westlake were named to the all-state junior team.

Six area players were selected to the all-state sophomore team, including Casey Clausen of Alemany, Zac Wasserman of Westlake, Manuel White of Valencia, Travis Johnson of Notre Dame, Patrick Norton of Hart and Alex Holmes of Harvard-Westlake.

In the small schools division, L.A. Baptist’s Tim Feirfeil and Moorpark’s Shane Brogdon were selected.

Committed: St. Bonaventure’s David Chaparro has committed to play at Cal Lutheran.

Chaparro was a two-year starter at safety for the Seraphs and earned All-Tri-Valley League and All-Ventura County Small Schools honors last season.

SOCCER

Jumping ship: Three more players have left the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team, Coach Brian Wiesner said, bringing the number of departures to six in the past month and a half.

Wiesner said defenders Abby Beahan and Jenn Gardner and midfielder Kim Erwin will not return for the Matadors’ 1998 season.

Beahan, a sophomore from Torrance, plans to transfer to Chico State. Gardner, a sophomore from Alta Loma, would have been academically ineligible, and Erwin, a freshman from Simi Valley, plans to study abroad.

BASEBALL

Making a list: Monroe High pitcher John Ennis has been rated the No. 65 prospect in the nation by Baseball America magazine.

Ennis is the only high school player from the region to make Baseball America’s list of the top 100 high school prospects for 1998. The complete list will appear in next week’s editions of the magazine.

Ennis, 6-feet-5 and 205 pounds, signed a letter of intent last November with UCLA. He pitched a no-hitter and perfect game last season as a junior at Monroe.

The No. 1 prospect in the nation is pitcher Josh Karp from Bothell (Wash.). He has signed with UCLA.

Third baseman Sean Burroughs from Long Beach Wilson and a USC signee is No. 23 overall.

TRACK AND FIELD

Out of running: Junior Nancy James of Cal State Northridge, Big Sky Conference indoor champion in the women’s 800 meters, will not defend her title because she is recovering from a knee injury suffered during cross-country.

James, who ran career bests of 2:07.03 in the 800 and 4:26.83 in the 1,500 last year, is expected to be ready for the outdoor season.
