Hoover Turns It Up in Fourth to Knock Off Pasadena

Mark Hull scored 32 points, including 13 in a 30-point fourth quarter, and Hoover High came from behind to defeat Pasadena, 72-60, in a Pacific League boys’ basketball game Tuesday at Pasadena.

Hull, a senior forward, scored 26 points in the second half. Junior forward Zareh Avedian scored 11 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter for the Tornadoes (13-6, 3-1 in league play).

Pasadena (12-9, 3-1) led, 32-11, early in the second quarter, 36-25 at halftime, and 50-42 after three quarters.

“We pressured them a little bit more and they started turning the ball over,” Hoover Coach Kirt Kohlmeier said. “They started pressing us and it opened up our running game.”

Crescenta Valley 57, Arcadia 55--Christ Shakhmalian made four free throws in the last minute for the Falcons (12-8, 2-2) in a Pacific League game at Arcadia.

Rob Toroussian scored 16 points for the Falcons (12-8, 2-2), including four three-pointers in a second quarter.

Valencia 61, Saugus 56--Manuel White’s dunk midway through the fourth quarter ignited a 12-2 run and the Vikings rallied to win a Foothill League game at Valencia.

The Vikings (16-4, 3-1) trailed, 48-42, after three quarters.

Fabian Leon scored 18 points for Valencia, the No. 9-ranked team in The Times’ region poll.

Matt Bradley had 23 points for Saugus (8-11, 2-2).

Hart 49, Burbank 43--J.T. Stotts scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half, and the Indians (12-8, 3-1) rallied from a 13-point deficit in a Foothill League game at Hart.

Stotts sank eight of 14 three-point shots.

Santa Paula 78, Malibu 72--Senior guard Joey Riccio had 31 points and seven assists for the Cardinals (15-4, 4-0) in a Frontier League game at Malibu (6-9, 1-3).

Juan Guzman scored 16 and David Herrera added 13 for Santa Paula.

David Burley had 22 points and 15 rebounds for Malibu.

Antelope Valley 67, Highland 60--Josh Speaks scored 19 points for the Antelopes (12-7, 3-1) in a Golden League game at Palmdale.

Matt Parm scored 11 points for Antelope Valley. Steve Brown added nine points and 15 rebounds, and Roger Price had nine points and 12 rebounds.

Humberto Zamora scored 16 points for the Bulldogs (6-12, 2-2).

Sherman Oaks CES 66, Westside Alternative 54--Lawrence Lowe scored 21 points for the Knights (4-12, 3-2) in a Magnet Conference game at Sherman Oaks CES.

Marshall 57, L.A. Baptist 53--Frank Vasquez scored 24 points and Evan Regenstreif added 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Knights (5-10, 0-3) in a Alpha League loss at L.A. Baptist.

Price Christian 60, Faith Baptist 50--Tim Greer had 19 points and Stefan Grasu had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Contenders (4-10) at Price Christian.

Palmdale 89, Littlerock 68--Kerry Yates scored 27 points for the Falcons (11-8, 2-2) in a Golden League game at Palmdale.

Aaron Winchester added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons.

Gene Myzett scored 18 points for Littlerock (5-12, 1-3) and Tony Mayes added 15.

Burroughs 71, Canyon 55--Kevin Krose scored 26 points for the Indians (12-8, 1-3) in a Foothill League game at Canyon.

Jeremy Cartee scored 20 points for Canyon (10-10, 2-2).

Vasquez 65, Trona 60--Nick Gray had 22 points and eight assists for the Mustangs (3-10, 1-4) in a Desert Mountain League game at Vasquez.

Jay Panico added 15 points for the Mustangs.

Crescenta Valley 99, Arcadia 27--Michelle Greco had 23 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, and the top-ranked Falcons stretched their winning streak to 11 in a Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley.

Tara Gregory had 20 points and Sinnamonn Garrett added 19 for Crescenta Valley (15-1, 4-0).

Buena 89, Hueneme 26--Melissa Flores scored 22 points and Renae Hofmann added 16 points and seven steals for the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs (15-1, 7-0) in a Channel League game at Buena.

Glendale 67, Muir 51--Alina Markari scored 21 of 25 points in the second half, and the Dynamiters (12-7, 3-1) outscored the Mustangs, 47-30, in the final two quarters of a Pacific League game at Glendale.

Hilary Driffill had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Dynamiters.

Ventura 49, Santa Barbara 45--Despite being outrebounded, 33-21, the Cougars outscored the Dons (7-8, 5-2), 20-6, in the fourth quarter to take sole possession of second place in the Channel League.

After making 10 of 14 free throws in the first half, the Cougars (11-4, 6-1) sank 17 of 20 in the second half.

Sophomore center Kristine Gleisberg had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Ventura and sophomore guard Alez Gientke added 17 points.

Oxnard 44, Dos Pueblos 41--Yolanda Demby sank two clinching free throws for the Yellowjackets with five seconds left in a Channel League game at Oxnard (5-12, 3-4).

Burroughs 45, Canyon 43--The Indians (12-6, 2-2) scored only two points and missed all 11 of their free throws in the fourth quarter, but held on in a Foothill League game at Burroughs.

Hart 68, Burbank 37--Melissa Harrison had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Indians (14-2, 4-0), who won their 32nd consecutive Foothill League game at Burbank.

Moorpark 80, Calabasas 24--Damaris Hinojosa had 26 points, nine rebounds, 10 steals and six assists for the Musketeers (15-3, 4-0) in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.

Emily Williams added 14 points and eight steals for Moorpark, which led, 43-14, at halftime.

Santa Paula 57, Malibu 27--Sarah Kolbeck scored 23 points for the Cardinals (4-12) in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula.

Montclair Prep 51, Pacific Hills 29--Laura Power had 15 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals for the Mounties (5-5) at Montclair Prep.

Jacquana Young had 13 points and freshman Crystal McCutchen had 12 for the Antelopes (0-4 in league).

Quartz Hill 44, Lancaster 43--Shereen Green scored 13 points and the Rebels (4-11, 2-2) hung on in a Golden League game despite being outscored, 19-13, in the fourth quarter at Lancaster.
