Northridge Is Thrown for Another Loss, 9-6

Cal State Northridge concluded its season-opening baseball trip with its fourth loss in five games, 9-6, to Florida International on Friday in the Louisville Slugger tournament at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.

Northridge starter Jeff Martin departed after facing 11 batters in 1 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits, three walks and a hit batter while striking out two.

The Matadors prevented Martin from taking a loss by scoring two runs in the second inning and four in the third, chasing starter Brian Justine of Florida International (1-2).

Jim DeBiase (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Chris MacMillan and Mike McNeely had run-scoring doubles for Northridge and Marco Estrada singled twice.

Northridge went 1-2 in the tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 105, Pierce 56--Maxine Unverferth scored 18 points to lead the Cougars (16-7, 2-0) to a Western State Conference victory at Canyons.

Laura Tweedy added 17 points for Canyons, while Zevette Mitchell had 14 points and 17 rebounds.

Cheryl Flores had 20 points for Pierce (4-15, 1-2).

Cal Lutheran 76, Occidental 68--Brandie Murrish had 29 points and 16 rebounds to help the Regals to victory in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Missy Rider had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Regals (8-6, 4-0), who outrebounded the Tigers, 50-35.

Anna Celaya, a former standout at North Hollywood High, had 30 points and seven steals for Occidental (3-10, 0-3) and her twin Bobbie scored 10.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Arizona State 5, Pepperdine 4--No. 2 singles player Karoline Borgersen won her match as the Waves (3-1) lost in the Arizona State tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
