Buena Hops Over Ventura, Nears Another Title, 1-0

Buena High took a large step toward its fifth consecutive Channel League girls’ soccer championship and its sixth in eight years Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Ventura at Ventura High.

Freshman fullback Lerin Mundell of Buena (12-2-4, 7-0-2 in league play) bounced a 40-yard shot over Ventura goalkeeper Jeannine Loudermilk and into the net in the 11th minute.

Ventura is 11-8, 6-3.

In other girls’ soccer games:

Desert Christian 2, Paraclete 1--The Spirits (10-2-1, 3-1) suffered their first High Desert League loss in 49 games when a Paraclete defender knocked a ball into her own net with 30 minutes to play.

The goal gave Desert Christian a 2-0 lead. Jenny Alonzo scored for Paraclete five minutes later.

Paraclete’s streak stretched over six seasons.

Notre Dame 2, Harvard-Westlake 1--Sarah Morgan scored two first-half goals on assists from Melissa Rubey for the Knights (11-2-3, 2-2-1) in a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake.

Kim Jordan scored for the Wolverines (4-8-2, 1-2-1) in the second half.

Santa Barbara 3, Rio Mesa 1--Alexis Nieves’ header after a corner kick by Karina Molthu in the 75th minute allowed the Spartans (8-4-1, 4-4-1) to avert a shutout in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.

L.A. Baptist 5, Frazier Mountain 0--Jonna Dominguez scored three goals and Lisa Jeppson added two for the Knights (7-3, 3-1) in an Alpha League game at L.A. Baptist.

Dominguez, a freshman, has 15 goals.

Village Christian 5, Marshall 0--Kacey Sayers had four goals for the Crusaders (4-10, 1-2) in an Alpha League game at Village Christian.

Chatsworth 4, Palisades 0--Beezy Preis, Shannon DeVos, Heather Collins and Jackie Fodor scored for the Chancellors (16-1-1, 5-0) in a Coast-Valley League game at Palisades.

Granada Hills 6, El Camino Real 3--Sabrina Love scored three of her four goals in the second half and the Highlanders (8-5, 3-2) rallied in a Coast-Valley League game at Granada Hills.

Love, who has 15 goals, lifted Granada Hills into a 2-2 halftime tie with her first goal.

Michelle Vega and Dani Goodman had goals for the Highlanders and Amanda Light had three assists.

Melissa Cleal scored twice for the Conquistadores (7-4-1, 2-2-1).

Birmingham 4, Kennedy 1--Tiffany Williams, Norma Vanegas and Errin Smith scored in the second half for the Braves (10-2, 5-0) in a West Valley League game at Kennedy.

Cleveland 5, Canoga Park 1--Deanna Linder and Angela Velez each scored twice for the Cavaliers (12-4, 4-1) in a West Valley League game at Cleveland.

San Pedro 2, Grant 1--Second-half goals by Heidi Kreis and Kelly McIntire gave San Pedro a comeback victory in a Coast-Valley League game at Grant.

Sarah Rothman scored in the first half for Grant (3-11-2, 0-5).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Monroe 5, Sylmar 1--Hugo Videla, Orlando Ramirez, Nicolas Mendez, Oscar Meza and Wilson Herrera scored for the Vikings (9-3-3, 6-1-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Reseda 4, North Hollywood 0--Oscar Sims scored twice and Jesse Servin once in the first half, and Edwin Miranda scored in the second half for the Regents (10-0-3, 7-0-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory over the Huskies (6-3, 6-3) at Reseda.

“They just took us apart,” North Hollywood Coach Rick Pally said. “They have an all-star at every position and they’re hungry to win the City title. The only way I see them not doing it is if they beat themselves.”

The Regents earned the No. 1 seed in last season’s postseason but were upset in the second round. They have not lost in their last 18 conference games dating to Jan. 17, 1997, against Poly.

Poly 1, Canoga Park 1--Juan Vega scored for Poly in a Valley Pac-8 game at Canoga Park.

Buena 3, Ventura 1--Carlos Sanchez’s goal in the 33rd minute broke a 1-1 tie in a Channel League victory for the Bulldogs (11-2-4, 5-1-2) over the Cougars (8-6-1, 3-4-1) at Buena.

Buena’s Ariel Hurtado opened the scoring in the 10th minute and Nathan Kirby tied it in the 20th. Mike Bradbury scored on a direct kick 12 minutes after halftime.

Santa Barbara 2, Rio Mesa 0--Dana Weymouth scored in the first half and Richie Alcaraz in the second for the Dons (11-5-2, 6-2-1) in a Channel League victory over the Spartans (10-5-3, 3-4-2) at Santa Barbara.

Hueneme 3, Dos Pueblos 2--Luciano Avalos, Evaristo Leon and Isai Barrios scored and the Vikings (2-8-3, 2-6-1) won their second consecutive Channel League game after losing their first 11.

Notre Dame 3, Alemany 2--Blu Murray headed in a cross from Niko Gutrugianios in overtime for the Knights (6-5-3, 3-2-1) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

The Indians rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit on goals by Andy Sutton and Josh Sage.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Louisville 14, Alemany 0--Kim Feig had five goals and Paloma Slezak four for the Royals (16-1, 3-1) in a Mission League game at Pierce College.
