Nakase Sparks Marina in Rout of No. 8 Edison

Natalie Nakase scored 21 points and had eight assists as fifth-ranked Marina defeated eighth-ranked Edison, 72-46, in girls’ basketball Tuesday.

The victory helped Marina (17-4, 4-1) keep pace with first-place Esperanza in the Sunset League. Edison dropped to 18-3, 3-2.

Marina, which forced 26 turnovers and got 17 points from Karyn Fierst, doubled its lead to 18 points with a 19-10 scoring advantage in the third quarter. Christina Patterson scored 15 for Edison.

In another Sunset League game:

No. 2 Esperanza 65, Fountain Valley 38--Leah Combs scored 23 points and Allison Gerber added 17 for the Aztecs (15-6, 5-0). Fountain Valley (4-17, 0-5) was led by Kelly Boeke with 19 points.

Huntington Beach 37, Los Alamitos 36--Christine Kimoto (17 points) made three of four free throws in the final minute for Huntington Beach (11-11, 2-3). With three seconds left, Los Alamitos (11-10, 1-4) missed a chance to tie the score with three free throws.

In the Academy League:

Downey Calvary Chapel 55, St. Margaret’s 48--Calvary Chapel outscored St. Margaret’s, 15-8, in the third quarter. Amber Arnold (11 rebounds) scored 23 for St. Margaret’s (2-9, 0-5).

In the Empire League:

No. 6 El Dorado 62, Loara 43--Jennie Bluth’s 31 points and 18 rebounds led El Dorado (18-3, 6-0). Yvette deBruijn had 10 assists.

In the Orange League:

No. 1 Brea Olinda 93, Magnolia 36--Erin Kelly scored 21 and Chelsea Trotter and Kate Ides scored 14 apiece for Brea (18-1, 5-0). Lindsey Davidson added eight assists, five steals and nine points.

Valencia 47, Western 38--Four of five starters scored 10 or more for Valencia (8-13, 3-2). Heather Hoppe led the way with 15. Western is 3-14, 1-4.

In a nonleague game:

Tustin 54, Newport Harbor 34--Jesse Cooper scored 16 for Tustin (16-4).
