AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL AREA 6 PLAYOFFS

Van Nuys Notre Dame 12, Ojai 2--Jon Horwitz, John Puccinelli, Jon Brewster and Ryan Stonerock each had three hits in an 18-hit attack for Van Nuys Notre Dame in a losers’ bracket game of the Area 6 tournament at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The game was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

Horwitz doubled and tripled and drove in four runs. Puccinelli hit a home run and a double and finished with two RBIs.

Stonerock homered and had two RBIs, and Brewster had a double and two RBIs to help Van Nuys Notre Dame (28-6) take a 10-0 lead after three innings.

The homers by Puccinelli and Stonerock were back-to-back when Van Nuys Notre Dame scored eight runs in the third.

Brendan Ryan and Alec Moss each had two hits for Van Nuys Notre Dame.

Austin Bryant (4-1) combined with Jason Hershfield to pitch a five-hitter for Van Nuys Notre Dame. Bryant struck out one and walked none.

Mike Frick (3-3) got the loss for Ojai (21-10-1), which was knocked out of the double-elimination tournament.

Brian Bronk had two hits, including a single that drove in one of Ojai’s two fifth-inning runs. A groundout by Paul Shirey drove in Ojai’s other run.

Van Nuys Notre Dame, trying to battle back in the losers’ bracket after an 8-6 loss to Santa Susana on Thursday, will play Pomona at 10 a.m. today at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

If Van Nuys Notre Dame wins that game, it will play again at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Westside-Brentwood game, which is scheduled for 2.
