DIGEST

Alex Yaftali of Westlake Village defeated Jonathan Wu of La Verne, 6-2, 6-1, to win the boys’ singles 16s Division of the Summer Junior Championships on Sunday at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

In other singles matches, Jared Drucker of Northridge outlasted Haig Kassabian of Los Angeles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to win the boys’ 12s championship.

In girls’ 18s competition, Shervin Saedinia of Woodland Hills won, 6-1, 6-0, over Judith DeVera of Carson.

In girls’ 16s, Jenny Munroe of Valencia beat Dianne Matias of Gardena, 6-4, 6-3; in girls’ 14s, Nina Yaftali of Westlake Village rebounded from a loss in the first set to defeat Jayme Hu of Torrance, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; and Celia Durkin of Woodland Hills won the the girls’ 12s division, 6-4, 7-5 over Melissa Ryan of Bakersfield.

GOLF

Keith Kinsel of Glendale shot a 70 to finish second in an 18-hole California State Amateur qualifying tournament Monday at the PGA West’s Tom Weiskopf Golf Course in La Quinta.

The only other qualifier from the region was Oxnard resident Steve Ragan, who shot a 73 to tie for fifth.

Donald Baker of Canoga Park will be an alternate for the state amateur. He scored a 75.

The California State Amateur is scheduled for July 10-12 at the SCGA Members Club in Murrieta.

Russ Clark of Ventura shot an even-par 72 to tie for fifth place in an 18-hole California State Open qualifying tournament Monday at Heritage Palms Golf Club in Indio.

Rick Garboski of Westlake Village shot a two-over 74 and tied for seventh place, and Michael Sorapuro of Lancaster scored 76 to tie for ninth place.

The trio were among the 24 players who qualified for the California Open at Indian Wells Resort and at the Heritage Palms course Tuesday through June 26.

BASEBALL

Crescenta Valley High’s stellar postseason keeps on going.

The Falcons (25-3-1), who won the school’s first baseball title, had three players selected to the All-Southern Section Division I team.

Pitcher Jordan Olson and second baseman Mark McCauley were first-team selections, and outfielder Nathan Barber was a second-team selection.

Crespi outfielder Andy Campanella and Palmdale shortstop Josh Gorman were also selected to the Division I first team.

SOFTBALL

Former Cal State Northridge player Chelo Lopez is leading the Women’s Pro Fastpitch softball league with four home runs.

Lopez and former Matadors Michelle McAnany and Cheri Shinn play for the Georgia Pride.

Crystl Bustos (Canyon High) and Miki Mangan (Camarillo) both play for the Orlando Wahoos. Bustos leads the league with 17 hits and is third in batting at .378.

Jennifer Parker, the 1997 Big West Conference player of the year from Northridge, is playing for the Tampa Bay Firestix. She leads the league with five doubles and is tied with Bustos in average (.378).

Quartz Hill’s Jodie Cox, Chaminade’s Maureen LeCocq and Cornerstone Christian’s Julia Tamai were selected Southern Section softball player or co-players of the year in three different divisions.

Cox, a junior left-hander who led Quartz Hill to a Division II title, was chosen the division’s co-player of the year along with Righetti ace Jocelyn Forest. Rebel Coach Coy Ray was selected the Division II coach of the year.

LeCocq, a junior right-hander who led Chaminade to the Division IV semifinals, and Santiago’s Angie Melendrez were selected the division’s co-players of the year.

Tamai was chosen the Division VI player of the year after leading the Eagles to their first section softball title. Eagle Coach Mike Monzo was selected the division’s coach of the year.

All-Southern Section Division I selections include Cindy Ball of Camarillo, Meredith Cervenka of Crescenta Valley, Kristin Combe of Thousand Oaks, Jennifer Durost of Highland, Kristi DiMarco of Palmdale and Lori Tande of Simi Valley.

Amanda Fortune of Hart, Amanda Melton of Saugus and Rhianna Rogers of Rio Mesa join Cox on the Division II team.

Oli Keohohou of Newbury Park was selected to the Division III team, while Mackenzie Vandergeest and Stephanie Hall of La Reina, Jemma Santos of Louisville and Regina Yuhasz of Alemany join LeCocq on the Division IV team.

TRACK AND FIELD

Miguel Fletcher of Alemany High placed second in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100 in the Golden West Invitational at American River College in Sacramento on Saturday.

Fletcher, runner-up in the 100 and 200 in the state championships on June 6, clocked 21.28 in the 200 and 10.61 in the 100.

In other events, freshman Schquay Brignac of Cleveland tied for fifth in the girls’ high jump at 5 feet 4 inches and sophomore Jessica Cosby of Granada Hills placed sixth in the shotput at 43-11 1/2.
