Williams Wins Hurdle Events to Spark Irvine

Al Williams finished first in the 110 and 300 hurdles to help Irvine defeat University, 73-63, in a nonleague boys’ track and field meet Wednesday at Irvine.

Williams, who finished third in the 300 hurdles (37.55 seconds) in last season’s state meet, was clocked at 40.6 in his first dual meet of 1998. Williams won the 110 hurdles in 14.7.

The Irvine girls’ team defeated the Trojans, 77-57. Lauren O’Hara won the shotput with a toss of 35 feet 11 1/2 inches and the discus with a mark of 107-4.

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

Aliso Niguel 73, Dana Hills 63--Nikia Hastie was first in the 100 (13.1) and 200 (28.1) and contributed to Aliso Niguel victories in the 400 and 1,600 relays. Kim Devine won the 400 in 1:03.4 for the Wolverines (1-0).

In nonleague badminton:

Corona del Mar 10, Anaheim 9--Corona del Mar’s Savanna King won in singles, then teamed with Sean Hooper for another victory in mixed doubles. Vallyn Hatfield and Scott Dong also won both their singles matches for the Sea Kings.

In the Glendora baseball tournament:

Fullerton 11, Glendale Hoover 9--Armando Lopez was two for five with two RBIs and Juan Monzon hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, to help Fullerton (3-0) advance to Saturday’s tournament championship game.

In the North Orange County tournament:

La Quinta 5, South Torrance 4--Gerald Laird’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning scored Nick Navarro with the game-winning run, capping a three-run comeback and lifting La Quinta (4-0) into the tournament championship game Saturday at Fullerton College.

Josue Pena was two for four with two RBIs and a run for La Quinta.

In the consolation games:

El Modena 14, Troy 4--Mike Walter was two for four with a home run, double and four RBIs and Tony Calderon went three for three with three runs and four stolen bases for El Modena (2-2). Freshman Travis Hertzberg earned the victory to improve to 2-0.

Valencia 9, La Serna 7--Mike Trevino hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the victory. It was Trevino’s second home run of the season.

Orange 8, Bellflower 2--Orange broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning when Chance Perry (two RBIs) doubled home Darrel Deason, who led off the inning with a single and stole second and third bases. Three batters later, Matt Meadows added a run-scoring single as Orange (2-2) scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Brett Sewell gave up only four hits as he picked up his first victory of the year, striking out six and walking none.

In nonleague baseball:

Sunny Hills 10, Los Angeles 0 (3 innings, field conditions)--Umpires were forced to call the game because of unsafe playing conditions. The baseball field is located within the track oval and athletes from the Los Angeles track and field team kept interfering with play.

In Olympic League golf:

St. Margaret’s 220, Calvary Chapel 256--St. Margaret’s Jimmy Freeman was the medalist, shooting a three-over 38 on the par-35 course at Marbella.

In nonleague golf:

Brea Olinda 381, LaVerne Damian 410--Brad Sader shot a two-over 74 for Brea Olinda (3-0) at Mountain Meadows and Imperial.

Foothill 205, Irvine 214--Nick Seymour was the medalist for host Foothill (3-1), shooting a par 36 at Tustin Ranch.

Fountain Valley 406, Corona del Mar 406 (Fountain Valley wins on lower sixth score)--The Barons trailed by 20 strokes after the first nine holes at Santa Ana Country Club, but had its five scoring players shoot 38 or better. Fountain Valley’s Candie Kung was the medalist, shooting three-over 75 at Santa Ana and Mile Square.

Katella 217, Garden Grove 245--Jason Woodrome was the medalist for Katella (3-2), shooting a one-over 37 on the par-36 course at Anaheim Hills.

In nonleague softball:

Orange 5, Costa Mesa 2--Elizabeth Ngayan, a late addition to the lineup, hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie and sparked a three-run inning for Orange (1-2). Ngayan, a freshman, had two hits for the Panthers.
