Compton High prospered all season in the shadow of rival and two-time defending Division II state champion Compton Dominguez.

But Thursday night, Compton had the spotlight all to itself after a 67-54 victory over Dominguez in the semifinals of the Southern California regional of the state tournament at Dominguez.

Compton advances to the championship game Saturday at Pauley Pavilion, where the Tarbabes will meet Santa Margarita in a rematch of the Southern Section Division II-AA final won by Santa Margarita.

Compton guard DeAndra Moore scored 22 points and had six assists to lead Compton, which avenged a nonleague defeat by Dominguez last month. Center David Hamilton added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Dominguez forward Tayshaun Prince, nursing a knee injury suffered in the Dons’ Southern Section Division II-A championship victory over Redondo Union last Saturday, played only the first half and did not score.

Compton led, 15-9, after the first quarter and 34-20 at halftime.

The Tarbabes’ biggest lead was 17 points and Dominguez never got closer than to eight. Michael Carson led Dominguez with 12 points.
