VOLLEYBALL

More than number: Pepperdine is ranked No. 1 this week for the first time since February 1993, but men’s Coach Marv Dunphy isn’t necessarily thrilled.

The Waves switched places in the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. poll with UCLA after the Bruins were swept in a match against Stanford last Friday.

“Once you turn 40, you start realizing what’s important, and what you do in the gym is what’s important,” Dunphy said. “I think those polls are for PR and that’s fine. That’s just something that’s outside of what we’re doing.”

Pepperdine (14-1, 11-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play) received 15 of 16 first-place votes. The dissenting vote? Dunphy selected the Bruins as No. 1.

“We’re good, but we’re not great,” Dunphy said. “I think we’re in a holding pattern.

“I always vote the team I think is No. 1 and UCLA is loaded with All-Americans. If we had beaten them, I probably would have voted us No. 1.”

Pepperdine lost to UCLA in a five-game match Jan. 29. The teams play again April 10 at UCLA.
