Bakersfield Breaks Away to Defeat Canyons, 43-20

Bakersfield College scored 16 fourth-quarter points in three minutes to break open a close game and defeat Canyons, 43-20, in a battle for first place in the Western State Conference Northern Division on Saturday night at Bakersfield.

The victory moved the Renegades (6-2, 4-0 in conference play) a half-game ahead of Canyons (7-2, 4-1) and snapped the Cougars’ six-game winning streak.

With the score tied, 20-20, the Renegades scored the decisive touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter when Brian Chapman intercepted a pass by Canyons quarterback Kevin Carrasco and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown.

Minutes later, Bakersfield’s Justin Reinier ran 21 yards for a touchdown to make the score 34-20.

On Canyons’ next possession, Bryan Eakin sacked Carrasco for a safety.

Carrasco was sacked eight times.

Canyons rushed for only 21 yards. Carrasco, the WSC’s passing leader, completed 16 of 33 for 252 yards and a touchdown. He threw two interceptions.
