M.K. Kanke of Granada Hills drove to series-best fourth victory Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the season finale of the NASCAR Southwest Series.

Kanke, 36, led the series in earnings with $11,675 but finished second in points to Steve Portenga of Sparks, Nev.

Portenga totaled 2,315 points to Kanke’s 2286. Dennis Dyer of Palmdale finished, Bob Lyon of Santa Clarita was ninth and Keith Spangler of Chatsworth was 10th.

Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished fourth in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. feature race Saturday night at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz., and is fourth in series points.

Ed Patterson III of Oak View finished seventh and Jay Drake of Canyon Country was eighth.

BASKETBALL

Erin Stepheson, sophomore guard for the Harvard-Westlake High girls’ team, underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a severed tendon in a finger, Coach Brian Taylor said.

Stepheson, a reserve last season when the Wolverines won the Southern Section Division III-A title, will miss at least 10 weeks.

The City Section boys’ and girls’ basketball preview show will air on the Board of Education’s channel 58, KLCS, tonight at 7:30. The City Section soccer preview show will be shown at 4 p.m. in Spanish and 5:30 p.m. in English.

Rob Hall, the Oak Park High boys’ coach the last seven years, will also coach the Eagle girls’ team this season.

Hall, who has guided the boys’ team to a 107-63 record, four league titles and seven consecutive postseason berths, takes over for Cathy Cameron, who resigned.

SOCCER

Tami Pivnick, who played at Chaminade High, has been selected women’s player of the week in the Pacific 10 Conference after scoring both goals in California’s 2-1 victory over Oregon and having an assist in a 5-0 defeat of Oregon State.

Pivnick, a sophomore midfielder, has four goals and eight assists for Cal (13-7), which won its first conference title and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.
