High School Playoff Scenarios
The field for the 16-team City Championship tournament will be selected Saturday morning. Only conference champions are guaranteed berths. The rest of the teams are chosen based on records and strength of schedule. The next 16 teams will play in the Division Championship (formerly 3-A) playoffs.
Northwest Valley Conference
* IN: Granada Hills (9-0, 6-0 in conference play) and Taft (8-1, 6-0) play for the conference title tonight. The loser probably will get into to the City tournament, too. With a victory tonight, Kennedy (6-3, 4-2) might be included in the top 16 teams.
* STILL HOPEFUL: El Camino Real (4-4-1, 3-3), Chatsworth (5-4, 2-4), San Fernando (5-4, 2-4).
Valley Pac-8 Conference
* IN: Sylmar (6-2-1, 6-0) and Van Nuys (7-2, 5-1) play for the conference title tonight. Sylmar might make the City tournament even if it loses. If Van Nuys loses, the Wolves are still playoff bound--but probably not among the top 16 teams.
* STILL HOPEFUL: Reseda (5-4, 4-2) and Poly (3-5-1, 3-2-1).
SOUTHERN SECTION
Division 1
Del Rey League
* IN: Bishop Amat (9-0, 2-0).
* STILL HOPEFUL: Notre Dame (8-1, 1-1) is in if it beats St. John Bosco (4-5, 0-2). Loyola (8-1, 1-1) is in if it beats Bishop Amat. Loyola probably gets an at-large berth even if it loses--just as long as Notre Dame wins.
Division 111
Foothill League
* IN: Hart (7-2, 4-0), Valencia (6-3, 3-1), Canyon (6-3, 3-1) and Saugus (3-6, 2-2).
* STILL HOPEFUL: Burroughs (0-4, 3-6) needs a victory over cross-town rival Burbank (0-4, 1-8) to have an outside chance at an at-large berth.
Golden League
* IN: Littlerock (9-0, 4-0), Lancaster (7-2, 3-1), Palmdale (5-4, 2-2), Highland (3-6, 2-2).
Mission League
* IN: Alemany (6-3, 2-0), St. Paul (8-1, 1-1).
* STILL HOPEFUL: This four-team league gets three automatic berths. St. Francis (5-4, 1-1) is in if it beats Alemany or if St. Paul defeats Crespi (5-4, 0-2). Crespi is in if it wins--or if its overall record is good enough to earn an at-large berth.
Pacific League
* IN: Arcadia (7-2, 4-0), Crescenta Valley (6-3, 3-1).
* STILL HOPEFUL: The winner of Muir (4-5, 3-1) and Pasadena (4-5, 2-2) tonight is in. The loser might get an at-large berth.
Division 1V
Channel League
* IN: Buena (5-4, 3-1), Santa Barbara (6-3, 2-1), San Marcos (2-7, 2-1), Ventura (4-4-1, 1-2).
Marmonte League
* IN: Newbury Park (7-1, 5-0), Westlake (7-1-1, 3-1-1), Thousand Oaks (4-4-1, 3-1-1), Moorpark (6-3, 3-3).
Pacific View League
* IN: Camarillo (7-2, 3-0), Hueneme (4-4-1, 3-0), Rio Mesa (2-7, 1-2), Channel Islands (1-7-1, 1-2).
Division V11
San Fernando League
* IN: None.
* STILL HOPEFUL: Chaminade (5-4, 2-0) is in if it defeats Harvard-Westlake (7-2, 1-1). If Chaminade loses, there will probably be a three-way tie for first including Serra (5-4, 1-1). A series of coin flips would determine which teams get the league’s two berths. The third-place team would be eligible for an at-large spot.
Division X1
Frontier League
* IN: Nordhoff (5-4, 3-0), Calabasas (7-1-1, 3-1).
* STILL HOPEFUL: Santa Paula (3-6, 1-2) is in with a victory over Malibu. Santa Clara (4-5, 1-2) needs an upset victory over Nordhoff and a Malibu victory to take the league’s third playoff berth. Or the Saints can pray for an at-large spot.
Tri-Valley League
* IN: St. Bonaventure (6-3, 4-0).
* STILL HOPEFUL: Carpinteria (6-3, 2-1) plays Oak Park (5-4, 1-2) and Bishop Diego (3-6, 1-2) plays Fillmore (2-7, 0-3) to determine the league’s final two playoff berths.
Division X11
Alpha League
* IN: Paraclete (8-1, 3-0), Kilpatrick (4-5, 3-1).
* STILL HOPEFUL: The winner of L.A. Baptist (6-3, 1-2) and Marshall (2-7, 1-2) tonight is in as the league’s third-place team. If L.A. Baptist loses, the Knights will probably qualify as an at-large team.
