Saddleback’s Schriber Wins State Golf by 4 Shots

Saddleback’s Selby Schriber shot a one-over-par 73 Monday in the final round of the state championship to win medalist honors with a 36-hole total of nine-over 153 at Spring Valley Lake in Victorville.

Schriber’s 73 was the low round for the two-day tournament and she finished four strokes ahead of her closest competitor, Sommer Stotts of Long Beach. Saddleback’s Mary Morgan shot 167 to finish sixth. Desert won the team title by 10 strokes over Mt. San Antonio, 683-693. Foothill (706) was third and Yuba (750) was fourth.

After three rounds that included many lopsided scores, the Southern Section girls’ volleyball playoffs should get interesting tonight.

Top Orange County showdowns in tonight’s semifinals, which begin at 7, include Irvine (13-5) hosting top-seeded Newport Harbor (21-0) in Division I-AA, defending state Division I champion Marina (18-1) hosting San Clemente (11-6) in Division I-A and unseeded Valencia (16-2) hosting top-seeded La Habra (17-1) in II-A.

Newport Harbor swept Irvine in both Sea View League meetings this season.

In all, 16 of 30 Orange County teams that entered the playoffs last week, including eight league champions, are still alive. (Five were eliminated in head-to-head competition with other Orange County teams). County teams have swept 29 of 38 matches. Only six had to go to five games, including both Valencia victories and two wins by Sonora (17-3), which is at second-seeded Lakewood St. Joseph (13-9) tonight in the other Division II-A semifinal.
