Hueneme Wins With Flourish

After falling behind by two touchdowns five minutes into the game, Hueneme High stormed back and routed Righetti, 40-15, Friday night in a first-round Southern Section Division IV playoff game at Hueneme.

The Vikings, who trailed, 15-0, began the comeback with a 13-yard touchdown run by Leslie Lee midway through the first quarter. Jeff Garcia passed to Keary Colbert for a two-point conversion.

On the ensuing kickoff, Tavilli Pollard recovered a fumble, setting up Hueneme at the Warrior 27-yard line. Henry Otineru capped the drive with a six-yard run that tied the score, 15-15.

Hueneme (6-4-1) took the lead with three seconds to play in the first half on a one-yard run by Otineru, who rushed for 45 yards in eight carries.

After being held to 21 yards rushing in the first half, tailback Donald Thompson of Heuneme cut loose and finished with 216 yards in 20 carries.

Thompson scored on runs of 10, 10 and 59 yards in the second half. Lee rushed for 86 yards in six carries.

Hueneme extended its on-field unbeaten streak to 10 games. The Vikings forfeited three victories because they used an ineligible player.

John Gonzalez of Righetti (4-7) rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown in 10 carries.
