8 Orange County Volleyball Teams Make State Tournament

Eight Orange County teams received berths in their respective divisions Sunday when the state girls’ volleyball playoff pairings were released.

All first-round matches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In Division I, top-seeded Newport Harbor (23-0) hosts Central Section runner-up Fresno Bullard (29-1). Capistrano Valley (19-2), which lost to Newport Harbor in the Southern Section Division I-AA final, is at Central Section champion Bakersfield Centennial (28-6). Defending Division I state champion Marina (19-2), which lost to Simi Valley Royal in the Southern Section I-A final, is at Del Mar Torrey Pines (22-4), which swept 1997 San Diego Section champion Poway in this year’s San Diego Section title match.

In Division II, Southern Section Division II-AA champion Santa Margarita (13-4) received the top seeding and hosts San Diego University City (18-9), the San Diego Section runner-up. La Habra (24-1), the Southern Section Division II-A champion, is at home against Sanger (19-10), the Central Section runner-up. Cypress (16-6), which lost to Santa Margarita in the section final, plays at San Diego Section titlist La Jolla (27-4). Defending Division III state champion Ocean View (16-3), runner-up in the Southern Section Division III-AA, is at San Diego Section champion San Diego University (27-2).

In Division IV, Calvary Chapel (15-2), which took top-seeded Cerritos Valley Christian to five games before losing the IV-A title match, earned an opening-round state rematch at San Diego section champion La Jolla The Bishop School (18-7), where it lost a year ago.

Quarterfinal matches are Saturday. Finals are Dec. 5 at Cypress College.
