No. 7 Troy Defeats Villa Park in Girls’ Tennis

Troy, the seventh-ranked team in Orange County, defeated Villa Park, 17-1, in nonleague girls’ tennis Wednesday at Troy.

Troy (9-0), ranked fourth in Division II, was led by Lori Judd and Veronica Fermin, who won 6-2, 6-1 6-0 in doubles.

The Warriors, who graduated six All-Freeway League seniors from its 19-2 team that reached the Division III semifinals last season, is led by five freshmen, two sophomores and two juniors.

“It’s amazing,” Coach Donna Judd said. “After having the best year in history last season and graduating six seniors, I’m at least as strong this year as I was last year.”

In singles, freshman Aya Sakoda won 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, sophomore Stacey Lee won 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 and freshman Karen Eitan won 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.

Villa Park is 3-5.

In another nonleague match:

Newport Harbor 14, Santa Barbara 4--Junior Chelsea Godbey didn’t lose a game in singles to lead fifth-ranked Newport Harbor (6-4).

In Golden West League boys’ cross-country:

Santa Ana 15, Servite 49--Alfonso Leon led Santa Ana (4-0), top-ranked in Division I, finishing in 15 minutes 53 seconds, on the 3.1-mile course at Acacia Park. Servite is 1-3.

In Golden West League girls’ cross-country:

Santa Ana 22, Rosary 33--Noemi Fuentes won the race for Santa Ana (4-0) in 19:45 on the 3.1-mile course at Acacia Park.

In Orange League girls’ golf:

Rosary 121, Valencia 125--Junior Maggie Barnett was the medalist for Rosary (9-1, 7-1), shooting her best score of the season, a three-over-par 36, at Fullerton Golf Course.

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

Rosary 3, Saddleback 0--Angela Conley had six kills for host Rosary (5-3, 2-0) in the 15-1, 15-5, 15-2 victory.

In Freeway League boys’ water polo:

Fullerton 11, Sunny Hills 5--The victory was Fullerton’s first over Sunny Hills since the 1960s. Goalie Ryan Berleth had 14 saves, three steals and one assist to lead Fullerton (6-2, 1-0), which took a 4-2 halftime lead. Scott Darah had five goals and Matt Leal had three for Fullerton.

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 13, Corona del Mar 4--Jeff Leeper had five steals and two goals to lead host Newport Harbor (7-2, 1-0). Gary Conwell led the Sailors with three goals and three assists.

Corona del Mar is 5-5, 0-1.

In the Sunset League:

No. 10 Marina 11, No. 6 Los Alamitos 5--Junior goalkeeper Mark Armstrong was the difference for Marina, stopping 17 shots. Jeff Larson, who had seven steals and two assists, scored six goals for Marina (8-2, 1-0). Erik Geoffrey had two goals for defending league champion Los Alamitos.

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

No. 4 Servite 12, No. 5 San Clemente 11--Jarrod Cruzat, who had four goals, scored the eventual winner with 2:27 left to play. Michael Kim had five goals and Phil Garcia had seven steals and five assists for Servite (9-1). Senior Beau Schuster scored three goals for San Clemente.
