Muir 15, Crescenta Valley 14--The Mustangs (3-3) blocked John Barbaro’s 24-yard field-goal attempt with 16 seconds to play to preserve a league-opening victory at Muir.
Crescenta Valley (3-3) was unable to generate much offense until late in the third quarter, when Seth Santoro connected with Steve Carballo on a 33-yard scoring pass play. Barbaro’s conversion kick tied the score, 7-7.
Santaro connected again with Carballo on a 37-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. Barbaro’s kick put the Falcons ahead, 14-7.
Muir responded with an 80-yard, 14-play drive capped by James Samuel’s five-yard touchdown run with 2:29 to play. Samuel ran for a two-point conversion to put the Mustangs ahead, 15-14.
Offensive tackle John Kang rumbled 50 yards on a fumblerooski play to set up the late field goal attempt by Barbaro, who missed field goals of 39 and 43 yards earlier in the game.
Santaro completed nine of 16 for 118 yards. Carballo caught six passes for 108 yards.
Derrel Furutani rushed for 100 yards in 19 carries for Crescenta Valley.
