1997 IN REVIEW

Rancho Alamitos was perfect in the regular season for a second consecutive season and was the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division VIII playoffs.

The Vaqueros beat Aliso Niguel in the first round, but were upset by Covina Northview, 14-7, in the second round. The Vaqueros scored one of the biggest victories in school history in Week 2, when they routed Division I power Esperanza, 38-14, behind David Vickers’ 162 yards rushing and three touchdowns and Alex Blanco’s 187 yards and one touchdown.

Vickers finished the season as the county’s fourth-leading rusher (1,890 yards) and fifth-leading scorer (29 touchdowns). Vickers also led the Vaqueros in tackles and interceptions (six) and he earned first-team all-county honors on defense.

Blanco suffered his second serious knee injury in the seventh game and missed the rest of the season, but finished with 1,085 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Los Amigos, led by senior quarterback Javier Acevez and its stingy defense, finished second in league play with a 5-1 record, but lost to West Covina South Hills, 14-6, in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lobos placed three players on the first-team all-league defense, lineman Najja Kee, linebacker Anthony Faletoi and defensive back Alex Bedolla.

Pacifica broke 50 points twice in league and took third place. The Mariners upset Sunny Hills, 17-3, in the first round but fell to section champion Laguna Hills, 20-10, in the quarterfinals.
