Most people expected El Camino Real High to need a year to retool after winning the City Section 3-A championship last season.
But the Conquistadores showed Friday on their home field that they will be competitive.
DeAngelo Nedd rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries and El Camino Real tied Dorsey, 12-12, in a nonleague opener.
A one-yard run by Nedd with 3:40 remaining tied the score. El Camino Real tried a two-point conversion, but Nedd was tackled at the one.
The Conquistadores had another scoring opportunity when George Cardenas recovered an on-side kick at the Dorsey 33 on the next play.
El Camino Real drove to the Dorsey 20 but committed two penalties and turned the ball over on downs with 58 seconds remaining.
A desperation pass by Dorsey’s Lonnie Honeycutt fell incomplete with two seconds to play.
El Camino Real outgained Dorsey, 214-166, and did not commit a turnover.
