Malcom Rushes Tustin by Los Altos

David Little and Branden Malcom scored touchdowns to lead Tustin to a 14-6 victory over Hacienda Heights Los Altos in a nonleague football game Thursday at Tustin High.

On the Tillers’ third drive of the game, Little scored from six yards with 2 minutes 6 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Malcom scored his touchdown on a three-yard run with 7:47 left in the first half. Malcom led Tustin with 107 yards rushing in 18 carries.

Tustin receiver Jay Tamkoc caught two passes for 19 yards before leaving the game with a knee injury.

Bobby Godinez scored the only points for Los Altos on a 17-yard run in the third quarter.

In other nonleague games:

Kennedy 14, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kennedy’s defense forced six turnovers and the offense supplied some big scoring plays at Santa Ana Stadium. Although senior quarterback Mark Cook completed only three of 14 passes for 81 yards, he did figure in both Kennedy touchdowns.

On the first play in the second quarter, Kennedy ran its double-reverse pass play and Cook passed to Joe Magallanes for a 68-yard score. Magallanes rushed for 108 yards in 22 carries for Kennedy (1-1).

Cook scored later in the quarter on an 18-yard run to make it, 14-0. Cook rushed for 70 yards in seven carries.

Ahmad Wright and Elwin Maradiaga both intercepted two passes to lead Kennedy’s defense. The Fighting Irish also recovered two fumbles.

Santa Ana Valley is 0-2.

Magnolia 41, Bolsa Grande 6--Will Speer scored four touchdowns and junior Jacob Davis, making his first varsity start at quarterback, passed for two touchdowns to lead visiting Magnolia (2-0).

Speer scored on runs of five and nine yards in the first quarter to give Sentinels a 14-0 lead. Then Davis passed for his two touchdowns in the second quarter.

Davis completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Asi Faoa and a 28-yard scoring pass to Jeff Martin to help the Sentinels extend the lead, 27-0.

After Bolsa Grande scored late in the second quarter, Magnolia put the game away with Speer’s third and fourth touchdowns, coming on runs of six and 14 yards.

For the second consecutive week, Bolsa Grande’s Doug Baughman managed only one touchdown pass, this one an 18-yarder to Jessie Jaso. Magnolia’s Jay Smith also intercepted one of Baughman’s passes.

Bolsa Grande (0-2) lost its season opener to Westminster, 24-6. Baughman is 15 touchdown passes shy of Todd Marinovich’s all-time county record.

University 24, El Monte Arroyo 14--Andy Dennis threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Chet Johnson in the third quarter to give University the lead for good at Irvine High School.

The Trojans took an early 7-0 lead on a 40-yard touchdown run by Dan Tadych, but Arroyo answered with two consecutive touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead.

University cut the lead to four on a 35-yard field goal by Chris Gray in the second quarter, then moved ahead, 17-14, on Johnson’s touchdown reception. University’s defense shutout Arroyo in the second half.

South Torrance 10, Cypress 6--After a scoreless three quarters, South Torrance scored a field goal and touchdown in the fourth to defeat host Cypress.

Cypress’ score came on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Jeff Crooks to David Hansen with five minutes left in the game.

David Aupiu threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Mark Zinniger for South Torrance.
