Without Esmero, Mater Dei Falls to Corona del Mar

Eva Baudenbacher swept in singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, teaming with Nadia Vaughan and freshman Kim Singer to win eight of nine singles sets to key host Corona del Mar’s 11-7 victory over Mater Dei in nonleague girls’ tennis Thursday.

Mater Dei (1-1) played without Melissa Esmero, who sat out with a shoulder injury. Esmero is the region’s top-ranked 16-and-under player. Corona del Mar is 2-0.

In other nonleague matches:

Fullerton 10, Kennedy 8--Annie Bethancourt won her final singles set, 7-5, to give the host Indians (2-2) the victory. Bethancourt won her other singles sets, 6-0, 6-4. Kennedy is 1-2.

Katella 12, Connelly 9--Nada Nabulsi won in singles, 6-0, then teamed with Gaby Gomez for 6-0, 6-0 victories in doubles for Katella (1-3).

Laguna Beach 15, San Clemente 3--Ashley Maddocks, playing in her first match for Laguna Beach since suffering a calf injury two weeks ago, won her sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

In nonleague girls’ cross-country:

Troy 22, El Dorado 34, Valencia 68--Troy’s Vanessa Hernandez finished first in 21 minutes 4 seconds on Tri-City Park’s three-mile course.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

Edison 129, Ocean View 134--Lauren Brown shot six-over 37 for Edison (2-0) at David L. Baker.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Edison 3, Lakewood 2--Lauren Belcher had 18 kills, Christina Patterson had 16 and Trisha Grady had 11 blocks for Edison (1-1), which won, 16-18, 15-9, 13-15, 15-8, 15-9.

Los Alamitos 3, University 2--Phelan Wright had 21 kills and Bridget Merritt had 15 for host Los Alamitos (4-0), which had nine match points before winning, 14-16, 15-2, 10-15, 15-8, 15-12.

Marina 3, Sunny Hills 0--Ashlee Phillips had 33 assists and six aces and Chanda McLeod had 15 kills for visiting Marina (2-0), which won, 15-11, 15-3, 15-9. Stevie Nicholas had 21 kills for Sunny Hills.

Western 3, Troy 2--Masina Pangia and Loressa Berona each had 16 kills for Western (2-1), which won, 13-15, 16-16, 16-14, 11-15, 15-11.
