Perry Steps Into Starting Role, Helps Canyon Run Over Highland

Canyon High apparently has no shortage of running backs this season.

Jimmy Perry stepped into the featured role Friday night and responded by rushing for 146 yards and a touchdown in 21 carries to lead the Cowboys to a 17-0 nonleague victory over Highland at Canyon.

Starting in place of Drew Welch, who was sidelined with a sore right ankle, Perry scored on an 11-yard run early in the second quarter to complete a 10-play, 81-yard drive. The sophomore was momentarily knocked unconscious after a tackle by Highland linebacker Paul Soto with 6:52 left in the third quarter and sat out the rest of the game.

Pat Terry kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Cowboys (2-0) a 10-0 lead early in the third quarter. Perry set up the score with a 50-yard run.

Terry missed a 47-yard attempt on the final play of the first half.

The Bulldogs (0-2) were penalized nine times for 60 yards and lost two fumbles in Canyon territory. Running back Brandon McElvaine was held to 32 yards in 12 carries and quarterback Jeremy White did not complete a pass in seven attempts.

Ryan Jones rushed five times for 42 yards for Canyon and put the game out of reach on a five-yard touchdown run with 5:25 to play.
