Burbank Takes Lead, Puts Hart in Its Place--Second

Sophomore Tigran Martirosyan swept three sets to help Burbank High defeat Hart, 11-7, and take sole possession of first place in the Foothill League boys’ tennis standings Wednesday at Hart.

Burbank (10-2, 3-0 in league play) made a big move toward its 12th consecutive Foothill title.

Hart (9-1, 2-1) fell to second place by losing the 3 1/2-hour match.

Martirosyan beat freshman Jesse Ferlianto of Hart, 7-5, by winning the last six games after a 20-minute rain delay to help the Bulldogs build a 5-1 lead.

Drew Simmons and Joe Tu of Burbank broke a 3-3 tie and beat sophomores Adam Davidson and Jeff Oyama (28-2), Hart’s No. 2 doubles team, 6-4, after the delay.

Andrew Davidson and Todd Castagna (26-1) recorded the only sweep for Hart at No. 1 doubles.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

UCLA 2-6, Cal State Northridge 1-2--Top-ranked UCLA needed home runs from Stacey Nuveman in the sixth and Crissy Buck in the seventh to beat the host Matadors (16-15) in the opener of a nonconference doubleheader.

In the second game, Lupe Brambilla, from Monroe High, scored three runs for UCLA (35-0).

Canyons 12, Santa Monica 5--Danni Socha hit a three-run home run for the Cougars in a Western State Conference Southern Division victory at Santa Monica.

Valarie Reyes hit a grand slam for Canyons (18-11-1, 4-3).

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Alemany 5, Grove City (Ohio) 4--Sarita Contreraz’s run-scoring single broke a tie for host Alemany.

Westlake 4, Agoura 0--Erin Voeltz pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Warriors (8-1, 2-1) in Marmonte League play.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Westlake 11, Moorpark 2--Allen Osborne hit a homer and double for the host Warriors (8-1-1, 3-1) in a Marmonte League victory.

Lancaster 15, Quartz Hill 3-- Mike Hewson had five hits and three RBIs for the Eagles (9-3, 4-0) in a Golden League victory.

Palmdale 3, Royal 1--Matt Harrington (4-1) pitched a no-hitter and struck out 15 for the Falcons in a Pomona tournament semifinal.

Chris Testa had two home runs and three RBIs for Palmdale (8-4).

Scott Rice (3-1) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 for Royal (9-2-1).

Grant 15, Mojave 5--Tito Gurrola had four hits and four RBIs for the Lancers in a victory at the Las Vegas Durango tournament.

Ricky Cortez had three hits and three RBIs for Grant (9-3).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Ventura 6, Oxnard 5--David Arroyo had five hits, scored six runs and pitched two victories for the Pirates (14-11) in the Santa Barbara tournament at Ventura. The Pirates routed Antelope Valley, 18-4, in their other game.
