Ray’s Win Leads Mission Viejo Past Irvine in Boys’ Swimming

Evan Ray’s breaststroke victory helped lead Mission Viejo to an 86-84 victory over top-ranked Irvine in nonleague boys’ swimming Friday at the Heritage Aquatic Complex in Irvine.

Ray, who had the county’s fastest time in the event this season, eclipsed his mark by more than a second with a time of 59.27.

Mission Viejo, ranked second in the county, also defeated No. 10 Marina, 117-53, in the tri-meet.

The Diablos opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay as Matt Kelleher, Attila Szilagyi, Bo Luddy and Matt Feeney swam a 1:40.53.

Kelleher finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.86). Jeff Larson of Marina won the event in a county-best time of 1:46.08. Luddy won the 100 butterfly (53.58).

Besides Larson, Justin Fassnacht was Marina’s only other winner, winning the 50 freestyle in 22.76.

The Diablos also got a victory in the 500 freestyle when Scott Davison turned in a 4:45.75.

Jason Hwang was a double winner for Irvine. He won the 100 freestyle (49.69) and the 100 backstroke (53.69). The Vaqueros also won the 200 individual medley on Jeff Natalizio’s time of 1:57.21, the fastest in the county this season.

Irvine beat Marina, 125-45.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Irvine sweeps--Top-ranked Irvine beat No. 5 Mission Viejo, 117-53, and No. 4 Marina, 123-47. Romina Mosquera, Danielle Taylor and Stephanie Hsiao led the Vaqueros by posting double victories. Mosquera won the 500 freestyle in a county-best time of 5:04.0.

In the Canyon softball tournament:

Brea Olinda 2, Murrieta Valley 1 (8)--Tiffany Whitton struck out 12 and walked one in a no-hitter for visiting Brea (6-5-1).

El Dorado 4, Newport Harbor 0--Pitcher Melissa Hobson (4-1) had 17 strikeouts and gave up one hit for host El Dorado (8-2). Nicole Baker hit a home run in the sixth, her first of the season. Newport Harbor is 4-8.

Orange 5, Esperanza 0--Senior Wendi Kralich pitched a two-hitter in the shutout for Orange (4-5). Kralich had two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Crystal Zborill went three for four with a home run in the second inning for the Tigers.

In nonleague softball:

Anaheim 5, Paramount 1--Lorena Iglesias hit a two-run triple in the third that put host Anaheim ahead, 4-0. Paramount (5-6) scored one run in the seventh.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Valencia 14 1/2, Western 6 1/2--No. 1 doubles team of Tom Yee and Sibu Harikumar won, 6-3, 6-1, for visiting Valencia (8-3, 2-0).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

El Dorado 3, Brea Olinda 0--Steve Bednar had six kills for El Dorado (5-1), which won, 15-0, 15-6, 15-4.
