Taft’s Brignac Signs With Northridge

Running back Marquis Brignac of Taft High, the 1998 City Section football co-player of the year, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Brignac, 5 feet 10 and 180 pounds, rushed for 1,855 yards and scored 20 touchdowns last season to help Taft (12-2) win the City championship.

BASKETBALL

* Kent Dennis of Cleveland High, an all-City guard, visited West Virginia last weekend and is close to committing to the Mountaineers.

The 6-3 Dennis averaged 24.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists last season to help Cleveland (21-5) win the West Valley League title and advance to the City quarterfinals.

TENNIS

* Thousand Oaks High sophomore Phillip Sheng and Calabasas junior Nick Weiss advanced to today’s round of 32 in the Easter Bowl Junior Championships at the Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Grenelefe, Fla.

In boys’ 18 division matches, Sheng posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Eric Robertson of Milwaukee and Weiss won, 6-1, 6-3, over Ben Brier of South Dartmouth, Mass., on Sunday.

In girls’ 18 division, Glendale resident Maureen Diaz advanced with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Crystal Cleveland of Delray Beach, Fla.

Tiffany Brymer of Apple Valley, who won the Southern Section girls’ individual title last December while attending Rio Mesa High, also advanced in girls’ 18 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kathleen Blaszak of Fairfax, Va.

Erica Sauer, 13, of Somis advanced in girls’ 14 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Julie Martin of Key Biscayne, Fla.

BOXING

* Middleweight P.J. Goossen (19-1, 13 knockouts) of North Hollywood has agreed to fight Hector “Macho” Camacho (68-4-1) on June 18 in Miami at a site to be determined.

GOLF

* Ryan Wyman of Hart High shot an eight-over-par 152 to tie for 12th place in the boys’ division of the American Junior Golf Assn. Scottsdale Junior Classic in Arizona on Sunday.

Ina Kim of Harvard-Westlake tied for fifth in the girls’ division with a 22-over-par 164.

AUTO RACING

* Corey Kruseman of Ventura won the 30-lap United States Auto Club Western States Midget main event Saturday night at Ventura Raceway.

BASEBALL

* All-Marmonte League shortstop David Johnson of Agoura High will miss the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury.
