Fountain Valley Reaches Final in Pride of Coast

Senior left-hander Sam Greco gave up three hits in five shutout innings to help Fountain Valley defeat host Newport Harbor, 5-1, in the semifinals of the Pride of the Coast baseball tournament Tuesday.

Bryan Daguio hit a home run in the second inning for Fountain Valley (11-4), which advanced to the final. San Clemente plays Santa Margarita today in the other semifinal.

Newport Harbor is 4-9-1.

In consolation games of the Big West tournament:

Capistrano Valley 8, Marina 1--Senior right-hander Charlie Beardslee gave up seven singles and went the distance for Capistrano Valley (5-7). Travis Becktel drove in two runs with two doubles, and Kris Glidden had two hits and a run scored for the Cougars.

Irvine 19, San Francisco Riordan 4--Terry Parker’s three-run homer in the sixth inning gave Irvine a 13-4 lead. The Vaqueros (8-5) stole 11 bases in the game.

In consolation games of the Coachella Valley tournament:

Edison Wins Twice--Glenn Hedgpeth hit two home runs, one each in a 7-1 victory over El Centro Southwest and a 6-5 victory over Brawley in nine innings. Against Brawley, Brent Roumeliotis hit a two-out bases-loaded single in the ninth for Edison (10-5).

In a consolation game of the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Hacienda Heights Los Altos 5, Santa Ana Valley 2 (5 innings, rain)--Sergio Santos and three hits, including a solo home run in the fourth, and drove in two runs for Los Altos (8-5).

Bryan Save and Robert Padilla each had two hits for Santa Ana Valley (5-10).

In the first round of the West Coast Classic tournament in San Jose:

Calvary Chapel 11, San Jose Leland 1 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Winning pitcher Brett Young (6-0) gave up two hits and a run in four innings and hit a double to lead the Eagles (10-1) at Archbishop Mitty High.

Tustin 6, Mountain View St. Francis 3--Omar Barrera was four for four with two runs scored and Chad Lloyd had three hits and three runs scored for Tustin (7-3).

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Cypress 3, Kennedy 0--Brian Morris had 11 kills for Cypress (7-1, 3-0), which won, 15-11, 15-4, 15-6. Rupesh Bhakta had seven kills for host Kennedy (7-4, 1-2).
