Matadors Upset No. 2 Arizona

Unranked Cal State Northridge used a four-run fourth inning to register a 5-3 victory over No. 2-ranked Arizona in the second game of a nonconference softball doubleheader on Wednesday night at Arizona.

Northridge (17-19) trailed, 2-1, in the fourth when Ui Bal and Chastity Johnson each hit run-scoring singles to give the Matadors a 3-2 lead.

Jessica Creith’s single scored another run and the Matadors added one more on an error.

The Wildcats (33-5) scored in the fourth but Tara Glaister (11-10) held Arizona scoreless the rest of the way.

Glaister allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked none.

Bal had two hits.

Northridge lost, 10-1, in the first game, called after five innings because of the eight-run rule.

Bal hit a home run in the fifth, her fourth, against Becky Lemke (18-3).

Creith and Katrina Nolletti had the other two hits against Lemke.

BASEBALL

Ventura 2, Oxnard 1--David Arroyo’s single in the sixth inning knocked in the winning run in a Western State Conference Northern Division game at Oxnard.

Ventura (15-12, 5-6) scored twice in the sixth, aided by two walks, an error and a bases-loaded hit batter.

Oxnard (12-14, 5-6) scored in the eighth when Jess Sanchez’s double drove in Ruben Valenzuela, who also doubled.

David Turner (8-4) of Ventura pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run, six hits, and three walks, and striking out seven.

Noah Lowry retired the five batters he faced to pick up his third save.

Brody Reyes of Oxnard gave up four hits, one earned run, six walks and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings.

MEN’S GOLF

Canyons 365, Santa Barbara 369--Alex Kuyumjian shot five-under-par on the front nine, finishing with a three-under 69 for the Cougars (25-3) in a WSC match at Santa Maria Country Club.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Brigham Young def. CS Northridge, 15-9, 15-11, 15-4--Ryan Millar, from Highland High, had 15 kills for the top-ranked Cougars (23-1, 16-1) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory at Northridge.

Eckhard Walter had 17 kills for Northridge (2-20, 1-16).

Mac Wilson, also from Highland, did not play because he forgot his jersey.
