Northridge Signs Cerritos’ McCain

Marco McCain, a record-setting three-point-shooting guard for junior college state champion Cerritos College, has signed with Cal State Northridge.

McCain, 6 feet 3 and 185 pounds, scored 26 points, including six three-point baskets, in Cerritos’ 92-77 victory over Mt. San Jacinto in the state final last month at UC Irvine.

He averaged 14.5 points and 2.9 rebounds as a sophomore, leading Cerritos (33-5) to the South Coast Conference title and earning all-conference honors.

McCain was selected to the all-state team.

“I am impressed with his ability to shoot the basketball, especially on the perimeter,” Coach Bobby Braswell of Northridge said. “Marco also possesses a defensive tenacity that will allow him to succeed in our system.”

* Guard Kent Dennis of Cleveland has signed with West Virginia.

Dennis, an All-City selection, averaged 24.5 points.

“I know it will be difficult going away from home, but they feel they picked up a good player and they definitely need help at the guard position,” Dennis said.

TENNIS

* Stephen Amritraj and Sam Warburg defeated Derrick Bauer and Drew Hoskins, 7-5, 6-3, in a boys’ 16 doubles semifinal match at the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships at Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Grenelefe, Fla.

Amritraj, a freshman at Crespi High, and Warburg, of Sacramento, are seeded No. 2.

Tiffany Brymer of Apple Valley and Abigail Spears of Valley Center, Calif., defeated Lauren Fisher and Jessica Johnson, 6-0, 6-4, in a girls’ 18 doubles semifinal.

Brymer, formerly of Rio Mesa High, and Spears are seeded No. 2. The title matches are on Saturday.

* Bob and Mike Bryan, formerly of Rio Mesa High and Stanford, have been drafted by the Idaho Sneakers for the 1999 DuPont World TeamTennis circuit.

The Bryans will be coached by their father, Wayne.

The season runs July 6 through Sept. 25.

BASEBALL

* Catcher Joey Hamer of Newbury Park High will be sidelined another two weeks because of a bone chip in his wrist.

Hamer hasn’t played since sustaining the injury in the second week of the season.

FOOTBALL

* Billy Parra, a former Moorpark College assistant, has joined the Pierce coaching staff.

Parra will be reunited with David Banuelos, Pierce’s first-year coach and a former Moorpark assistant.

Parra played at Kennedy, Valley College and Cal Lutheran.
