El Toro Upsets Santa Margarita in Golf Match

Senior Donald Rhee and junior Mike Bullock shot par 72 to help unranked El Toro defeat top-ranked and previously undefeated Santa Margarita, 379-383, in a Sea View League golf match Thursday at El Toro Marine Base.

El Toro improved to 7-4, 3-2 in league with its first victory over Santa Margarita in five years. Ryan Dwight shot 74 to lead Santa Margarita (8-1, 4-1).

In Century League golf:

Canyon 230, Orange 256--Medalist Jake Underwood shot five-over 42 for visiting Canyon (7-3, 3-0) at Mountain View Golf Course. Orange is 0-4 in league.

In the Garden Grove League:

Orangewood Academy 203, Garden Grove 218--Trevor Jones shot five-over 37 at Cypress Navy Course for Orangewood Academy.

In the Golden West League:

Servite 186, Westminster 223--Sophomore Ryan Cole medaled in his second consecutive round for Servite (10-3, 2-0), shooting par 35 at Meadowlark. Jordan Nassar also shot 35 for the Friars.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 172, Laguna Hills 182--Brandon Fella shot two-under 32 and Brian Sinay shot 33 for University (10-1, 4-0), which shot two over as a team at Leisure World.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 372, Edison 393--Ryan Robertson shot two-under 70 at Mile Square for host Fountain Valley (6-4, 2-2).

Huntington Beach 398, No. 8 Los Alamitos 406--Kevin Kohara and Andy Anderson from Huntington Beach (7-2, 4-0) and Brett Dolch and Matt Crawford from Los Alamitos (3-1 in league) each shot six-over 78 at SeaCliff.

Marina 367, Esperanza 377--Scott Osterhout had three birdies and shot par 70 at Meadowlark for host Marina (8-3, 2-2). Esperanza is 1-3 in league.

In a nonleague match:

Brea Olinda 385, Villa Park 413--Alex and Brad Oh led Brea, each shooting four-over 75 at Green River and Western Hills.

In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:

Garden Grove 12, Pacifica 6--Kevin Kim swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, for Garden Grove (6-5, 6-1).

La Quinta 16, Rancho Alamitos 2--Matt Tong and Quan Chau swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, in doubles for La Quinta (11-1, 7-0).

In the Golden West League:

No. 10 Servite 13, Saddleback 5--Rich Mauban and Joey Suntharaphat won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles for Servite (11-3, 6-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 5 University 18, Costa Mesa 0--Scott Morgan and Ian Flores swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for visiting University (11-3, 6-0).

Laguna Hills 11, Laguna Beach 7--Tim Lee and Justin Sun each won two of three of their singles matches for Laguna Hills (5-6, 3-3). Chris Trimble and Adam Levitt were the only doubles team to win all their sets (6-4, 6-2, 7-5).

In the Sea View League:

No. 3 Woodbridge 13, Irvine 5--Senior David Lingman swept his sets at No. 1 singles without losing a game for Woodbridge (10-3, 5-1). The Warriors’ No. 1 doubles team of freshman Brett Van Linge and junior Jonathan Sheridan swept as well.

Santa Margarita 15, El Toro 3--Michael Hsu and Trevor Ware swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for host Santa Margarita (9-5, 3-3). Rafael Gale won in singles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, for El Toro.

In the South Coast League:

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 17, Trabuco Hills 1--Chad Whidtfeldt swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for Capistrano Valley (10-2, 3-1). Teammate Evan Chaparro won, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), in his first varsity match for the Cougars.

Mission Viejo 15, San Clemente 3--Ryan Milne and Dave Hall swept their sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles for host Mission Viejo (6-7, 3-1).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 9, Esperanza 9 (FV won on games, 81-80)--Eric Pham and Sean Chou won their final doubles set, 7-6 (7-2), to clinch the victory for Fountain Valley (6-5, 3-2) at Yorba Linda Country Club. Sebastian Lormier and Jim Vu swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, for the Barons.

In Century League boys’ volleyball:

Foothill 3, Santa Ana Valley 0--Chet Johnson had 12 kills for visiting Foothill (5-3, 4-0), which won, 15-7, 15-4, 15-1.
