Oak Park’s Ground Game Too Much for La Reina, 6-5

Oak Park High scored the tying and winning runs on consecutive ground balls to shortstop in the fifth inning of a 6-5 Tri-Valley League softball victory over La Reina on Thursday at Valley View Park in Agoura Hills.

Cindy Verity beat a throw to the plate on Melissa Johnson’s grounder to tie the score, 5-5, and Michelle Bregar beat a throw home on Rachel Colson’s grounder.

Johnson (5-1) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and hit a run-scoring single for Oak Park (8-2-1, 2-0 in league play).

Kristen Ward (3-3) struck out one and walked one for La Reina (7-5, 1-1).

In other softball games:

Sylmar 14, Poly 0--Vanessa Lira pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Spartans in a Valley Pac-8 Conference matchup at Poly.

Sylmar (9-4, 4-0) hit four home runs.

Monroe 5, Reseda 0--Colette Chisholm had seven strikeouts in a four-hitter for the Vikings in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe.

Christina Bates hit a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning for Monroe (5-7, 3-0).

North Hollywood 5, Van Nuys 4--Angela Sanhueza had three hits and two RBIs during an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Tashean Thomas and Nydia Mejia each had two hits for North Hollywood (5-4, 3-0).

Westlake 2, Royal 1--Katie Kearns scored the winning run from first on Katie Reifman’s bunt single and a throwing error in the eighth inning for the Warriors (14-2, 4-1) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Thousand Oaks 5, Moorpark 0--Sheridan Fowler and Nicole Angelo combined on a two-hitter in a Marmonte League victory at Moorpark.

Fowler (5-3) allowed one hit, while Angelo allowed one hit in pitching the final 1 1/3 innings for Thousand Oaks (10-5, 2-2).

Hoover 7, Glendale 1--Justine Takizawa had three hits, scored three runs and had two RBIs in the Tornadoes’ Pacific League victory at Glendale.

Cori Herbert (9-4) struck out 11 for Hoover.

Burroughs 3, Burbank 1--Kristin Carr’s two-run single fueled a three-run first inning for the Indians (7-7, 1-0) against Burbank (8-7, 0-2) in a Foothill League game at Olive Park in Burbank.

Canoga Park 1, Grant 0--Lori Kuebler hit a run-scoring double in the fourth inning for the Hunters (8-4, 3-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Quartz Hill 10, Palmdale 0--Kellie Cox had four hits and three RBIs for the Rebels in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill that was halted after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Cox’s sister, Jodie, added two hits for Quartz Hil (16-1, 2-0), which won its 16th consecutive game.

Lancaster 2, Highland 1--Tara Jensen hit a solo home run in the fourth inning that proved to be the winning run for the Eagles (4-6, 2-0) in a Golden League victory at Lancaster.

Melissa Rawson hit a sixth-inning home run for Highland (10-5, 1-1).

Antelope Valley 8, Littlerock 0--Traci Nolte had two hits and scored two runs in a Golden League game at Littlerock.

Kelly Bleyl struck out eight and allowed only two hits in pitching her fifth shutout for Antelope Valley (7-4, 1-1).

St. Bonaventure 14, Carpinteria 0--Annie Marostica struck out eight batters and allowed one hit for the Seraphs (10-5, 2-2) in a Tri-Valley League game that was halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

BASEBALL

Sylmar 13, Reseda 1--Sophomore Greg Ramos pitched a three-hitter for the Spartans (12-3, 6-0) in an East Valley League game at Sylmar that was halted after the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

Grant 9, Monroe 6--Felipe Tetelboin went three for three for the Lancers (12-3, 6-0) in an East Valley League victory at Monroe.

San Fernando 9, Birmingham 6--Jose Montes struck out 11 for the Tigers (3-12-1, 2-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at San Fernando.

Chatsworth 7, Cleveland 3--Scott Sellz hit a grand slam in the third inning of a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Chad Redfern followed Sellz’s grand slam with a solo home run for Chatsworth (13-2, 6-0).

Kennedy 17, Taft 2--Alex Avlas had four RBIs and two hits, including a two-run double for the Golden Cougars (9-9, 5-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game that was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule at Kennedy.

Loyola 6, Alemany 5--The Indians surrendered two runs in the seventh inning and lost a Mission League game at Alemany (9-7, 2-2).
