No. 4 Marina Rallies to Beat No. 2 Esperanza in Volleyball

Jeff Wootton had 31 kills and Scot Austin had 15 as No. 4 Marina defeated No. 2 Esperanza in a Sunset League boys’ volleyball match Friday at Esperanza.

The Vikings (8-1, 4-0) overcame 14-10 and 14-8 deficits in Games 1 and 2 and went on an 11-0 run in the final game, winning 16-14, 17-15, 15-17, 15-2. Esperanza falls to 8-1, 3-1.

In Golden West League boys’ volleyball:

No. 6 Servite 3, Santa Ana 0--Kyle Smith had 13 kills for visiting Servite (9-0, 5-0), which won, 15-0, 15-5, 15-5. Dan Taylor had 12 kills for the Friars.

In the Sea View League:

No. 10 Irvine 3, No. 3 Santa Margarita 1--Chris Ferguson had 22 kills and Paul Ambrozich had 17 for host Irvine in a 15-9, 15-10, 12-15, 15-7 victory. Bryan Kallenbaugh had 13 kills for Santa Margarita (5-5, 1-3). Irvine is 6-4, 2-2.

No. 5 Corona del Mar 3, Woodbridge 0--Senior middle blocker Dennis Alshuler’s 11 kills led Corona del Mar (6-2, 3-1) to a 15-4, 15-2, 15-6 victory. Senior middle blocker Morgan Jackson and junior outside hitter Greg Stampley each had 10 kills for the Sea Kings.

No. 1 Newport Harbor 3, El Toro 1--El Toro rallied from a 14-9 deficit to win the first game, 19-17, but the Sailors came back and won the next three, 15-5, 15-6, 15-10. Al Limon had 15 kills, Adam Hearlson had 11 and Ty Tramblie 41 assists for Newport Harbor (8-0, 4-0). El Toro is 5-4, 2-2.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Capistrano Valley 102, El Toro 68--Nikki Stevens won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes 16.33 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.30 for Capistrano Valley (6-3). Tanaya Kawakami won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.49 and the 500 freestyle in 5:28.15 for the Cougars.

Villa Park 134, Laguna Beach 34--Maureen Dunn won the 100 butterfly (1:07.38) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.21) for Villa Park (5-3).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

No. 3 Villa Park 132, Laguna Beach 35--Chris Koontz, Mark Laio and Chris Greene each won two events for Villa Park (8-0). Koontz won the 200 individual medley (2:13.42) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.25). Laio won the 200 freestyle (1:56.74), and 100 butterfly (1:00.08) and Greene won the 50 and 500 freestyle events in 22.81 and 5:22.45.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 15, Palm Desert 3--Binh Nguyen and Scott Bender teamed up for 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 victories and Derrick Klunchoo and Adam Clark swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, to lead host Capistrano Valley (11-2).
