Cal Lutheran Wins, 3-2, on Buben’s Single in 9th

Eric Buben’s hit in the bottom of the ninth inning gave host Cal Lutheran a 3-2 victory over Redlands in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball game Friday.

With one out, Buben singled down the left-field line to score Matt Swinford from second base. Swinford had been pinch-running for Brian Malchow, who opened the inning with a double.

Cal Lutheran (23-7, 14-2 in conference play) took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Jeremy Schlosser, his seventh.

Redlands (13-19, 7-9) tied the game on a single by Aaron Foote in the seventh.

Redlands pitcher Jim Harrison (3-5) struck out 10, walked two and allowed eight hits.

Washington 5, CS Northridge 4--Dan Phillips hit his 14th home run for the Matadors (20-24), who allowed all five runs in the second inning of the nonconference game at Washington (22-12).

The Master’s 15, UC San Diego 4--Aaron Penberthy had three hits with three runs batted in for the Mustangs (31-8-1) in a nonconference victory at UC San Diego (15-13).

Master’s trailed, 3-2, after six innings, then scored four in the seventh and seven in the eighth.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. UC Santa Barbara, 8-15, 15-13, 15-7, 15-9--Eckhard Walter delivered a career-high 41 kills and the Matadors won a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season finale at home.

Mark Lee had a career-high 20 digs for Northridge (3-21, 2-17), which snapped a school-record 13-match losing streak.

Rick Rauth, from Harvard-Westlake High, had 12 kills and 11 digs for the Gauchos (9-15, 5-14).

MEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 88, Pierce 21--Jon Conrad won three events for the Monarchs (7-2, 6-2) in a Western State Conference meet at Valley.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 80, Pierce 24--Stephanie Hammer and Lianna Kishimoto each won two events and the Monarchs (6-3, 5-3) won a Western State Conference meet at Valley.
